European Typewriters / CZECHOSLOVAKIA
The brand of typewriter most often associated with Czechoslovakia is the CONSUL, produced by Zbrojovka Brno in the city of Prague following the end of the Second World War.  There were, however, some other machines built in this country, which are either unusual or rare today.
TIP-TIP

Tilman Elster collection

This rare relative of the much more familiar Mignon index, type-sleeve machine was built between 1936 and 1938 in Warnsdorf, Bohemia (later Czechoslovakia) by a concern owned by a Mr. Franz Huebl.  It is thought that about 5000 were made.  This example is serial number 6251.
MATOUS PORTABLE

Tilman Elster collection

Produced in very small numbers by Karel Matous about 1935 in Czechoslovakia.  The paper table label says "original matous" in all lower-case letters.  Nothing else is known at this point.  The machine is notable for an extremely compact design, both in height and depth.  Serial number NC779.
