European Typewriters / France / Rooy
Messrs. Rooy had begun production with the Heady, an index machine like the Mignon, but in 1936 began production of its own machines with the help of a production license from Underwood Elliot Fisher of the United States.  The company had also brought in Olympia portables -- and later, in 1950, would introduce the ultra-flat design of J.L.H. Borel as its Rooy Portable.
ROOY B44-1

Tilman Elster collection

The Rooy standard machines are very much like the contemporary Underwood standards, which is only natural since they were license-built.  This is a B44-1, with serial number 505370 and which was built in 1948.
ROOY B44-II

Tilman Elster collection

This is an early 1950's Rooy, the B44-II, with serial number 516535.
ROOY 10

Tilman Elster collection

This is an early Rooy 10 portable, based very largely on the contemporary Underwood machine.  Serial 300469, dating to roughly 1937.
ROOY 28

Tilman Elster collection

A similar, but not identical machine is this Rooy 28, which has more features.  Serial number 305309, built 1938.
ROOY 40

Tilman Elster collection

This machine carries the different label "Rocher Rooy" on its paper table.  This model was made up until, and then again following, the Second World War.
ROOY PORTABLE

Will Davis collection

This is the machine most people think of when the name ROOY is mentioned; the encased and flat travel typewriter designed by Joseph Borel, which was introduced in 1950 after protracted development.  You can
click here to see an extensive discussion of this machine and its variants.  This example is serial number 16758, built 1951.
RACER

Tilman Elster collection

The larger Rooy portable continued in production along with the new, flat portable, and had different styling on various models.  This machine is a Rooy Racer, serial number 387601, manufactured 1955.
ROOY MINOR

Tilman Elster collection

This is a different styling of essentially the same machine as seen above.  The ribbon cover treatment, as well as the overall shape, is quite striking.  An underappreciated machine in the visual sense, no doubt not appreciated because very few are seen.  This machine has serial number 387775 and also dates to 1955.
