Dear Parents/Guardians of Students in Grade 6:
The Values, Influences and Peers (VIP) Program delivered by the York Region Police in partnership with the York Region District School Board is offered to all Grade 6 students.
This vital program, which builds on the Guidance, Character Education and Healthy Living curriculum, helps our students to explore social issues and values while developing a respect for themselves, others and the environment. These issues are explored through guided discussion led by York Region Police Officers and your child’s classroom teacher. Students learn the consequences of anti-social behaviour, recognize the effects of peer pressure, identify the effects of harmful substances and learn to make more effective decisions. Students build positive relationships with their peers, their teachers and the police officers throughout the program.
The program consists of guided discussions, presentations by the police officer and other community members, completion of the VIP journal, videos and a tour of the local police station. The topics which will be addressed include:
? Peer Pressure ? Decision Making ? Respect ? Bullying
? Vandalism ? Theft ? Gangs ? Youth and the Law
? Dangers of Drugs ? Alcohol and Tobacco ? Internet Safety
The discussions surrounding these issues are held in an environment that is safe, inviting and encouraging where students are asked to respect people’s feelings and opinions. The conversation is often frank and the videos are realistic portrayals of the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Students are always given the option to not participate in viewing any of the more realistic videos.
