Descriptive Narrative TASK OVERVIEW When you are asked to write a short story, or asked to do some "creative writing", you are doing what is called "Narrative Writing". Narrative writing is meant to entertain! Part of being human is getting to tell great stories! Examples: Story (personal, true, imaginative), Fable, Myth, Poem, Play, Biography People enjoy reading stories and watching films about interesting people, animals and other characters. If the characters are fascinating, we are interested in the rest of the story like the setting (place) and the plot (events in the story). If the characters are boring, most of us won't care to read or to watch a film about them, even if the rest of the story is good. INSTRUCTIONS Descriptive Narrative First you will complete handout activities on the following 1) the four kinds of sentences (declarative, interrogative, imperative & exclamatory) 2) the three sentence types (simple, compound & complex) 3) the three different ways to use quotation marks You will be applying the skills obtained from the above activities into a descriptive narrative. A Narrative Outline The plot is the main story of a piece of writing. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. In the beginning, we learn about the characters, the setting, and typically, about a problem or problems that our hero needs to resolve. In the middle is where most of the action takes place. Here is where our hero discovers that his/her problem is not so easily solved! The ending is where our hero finally resolves the problem, or problems, and lives happily ever after. (Well, at least in fairy tales.) 4) Complete the narrative plan outline provided to help you with the structure of your descriptive narrative. (this is your brainstorm) 5) Continue with the writing process (rough draft, revise and edit, self assess, good copy, self assess * make sure your final copy demonstrates proper use of all the types and kinds of sentences studied, along with quotation marks.
