Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a rowdy musical about the Pontipee brothers who live out in the wilderness of Oregon Territory in 1850. Adam the eldest, goes to town and finds himself a wife. He sees Millie and decides that she is the woman for him. Once Millie gets the other brothers cleaned up, she sets her mind to helping them find girls of their own. A nearby barn-raising is the perfect opportunity. This scene is the highlight of the show's many dance numbers, with incredible feats of athleticism. Predictably, the six remaining brothers become smitten with six girls from town, and after moping around the farm like lovesick puppies, in the toe-tapping number "Sobbin' Women," Adam encourages his brothers to go into town and bring their girls back to the farm. Naturally, he also reminds them to make sure they bring the parson back with them. The show was written by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay, with music by Gene de Paul and Joel Hirschhorn, and lyrics by Johnny Mercer and Al Kasha. "Wonderful, Wonderful Day," "Sobbin' Women," "Wedding Dance," and "Goin' Courting" keep the pace hopping. |
