It's not so far away from me, so I visit when I can,
Years ago it was a den of iniquity, a crowded, dirty place,
Where homeless people congregated on corners
And crime stood at an all-time high.

Now, thanks to good governing, the city rises from the ashes,
Cleaner, friendlier, crime at an all-time low.
I don't know where they have put the homeless,
And I know the city is financially broke.

But tourists fill the streets again, restaurants are crowded,
Business is better, though not as good as before 9/11,
And people smile and seem to understand
We're all Americans, every one of us.

Some have been here from birth, some are newly arrived,
Mexicans, Italians, Irish, Spanish, Jews, Greeks, Russians,
Black, White, Red, Yellow, Brown, Mixed,
Proud to be in America.

Pursuing the American dream of
Starting a business, buying a home, raising a family,
Working long hours, working for success,
In a city where any dream or goal is attainable.

So when you think of my City, think nice thoughts,
Of lovely parks, skyscrapers, museums,
And the people who make it possible,
Americans all.
