Falcon Files - 12/30/99

Thanks again to Angie Sammons, who continues to take time out of her schedule to write up these reports. I really appreciate it, Angie!!

*This appears to be the last week of the "Falcon Files" series with Tim Dwight.
*Tim started with a recap of last week. The Falcons beat the Cardinals. Dwight started, he said that he had an okay game, and a lot of fun winning.
*The remainder of the show was asking different players some of the highs and lows of the year.
*One player responded to the question with "1 week left" for the high point and "1 week left" for the low point as well.
*Chris Chandler responding with "the guy in the slot rag dolling you that he would have had a touchdown, but he didn't."
*Then TD asked if anyone on the team liked him. Someone in the background said "yeah, when you're not hurt."
*Another response to the question of the high point of the year was "seeing Tim Dwight grow up as a receiver and catching a few touchdowns, and seeing guys not quit." "Winning last week may have been the high point of the year." (Seems as if everyone agrees that winning last Sunday was the high point of the year.)
*As for Tim his high points were "getting a little playing time-showing the coach I can do something on the field." And for the low "losing 11 ball games."
*He concluded with saying that they hope to win the next game and use it as a spring board to next season.

News for December 29

Tim Dwight was voted by the fans as their 'Favorite Iowa Hawkeye of the 20th Century' at Hawkeyesports.com. Votes were taken for months prior, and in the end it came down to Chuck Long and Dwight. On December 29, it was revealed that Tim was #1 in the voting. This just goes to show what kind of respect and admiration the fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes have for Tim Dwight. He is truly an ambassador for not only the University of Iowa, but the entire state as well. Congratulations Tim; you are truly deserving of this dubious honor!! Click here to see the voting results.

News for December 26

Tim Dwight returned to the starting line-up in the Falcons' 37-14 thrashing of the Arizona Cardinals and played well. He caught 3 passes for 52 yards and returned 3 punts for a total of 21 yards. Winslow Oliver, a backup running back, handled the kickoff return duties, as Dwight was still slowed a little by his injury. He had 73 all-purpose yards on the day, running his season total to 1,625. The Falcons wrap up their season next Monday night, as the San Francisco 49ers come to Atlanta. Hopefully the Falcons can end the year with a couple victories and head into the off season on a positive note....

Falcon Files report - 12/23/99

Thanks again to Angie Sammons for sending this in:
*Tim was dressed as Santa and spoke of another tough loss to Tennessee last week. He said they played well but still came up short.
*This week he was asking a few of his teammates about their favorite gift given to them at Christmas.
*Ronnie Harris, wide receiver, said that his was playing on the same team as Tim Dwight.
*Danny Kanell, backup QB, said his was the big wheel Santa left him when he was 7 years old.
*Ray Buchanan, defensive back, said his best gift was his first car, a Probe. He added that it was better than riding his skate board at that time.
*Brian Koslowski, tight end, said his best gifts were his Mercedes and a ring.
*Tim asked Chris Calloway, a former Michigan player, what he had to say to the people back home in Iowa, and his response was: "I hate those pink locker rooms."
*This weeks Falcon Files concluded with Tim wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and for everyone to enjoy the snow.

News for December 19

Tim Dwight was de-activated prior to the Atlanta Falcons game against the Tennessee Titans and, consequently, did not play. Dwight injured his hamstring and knee against the New Orleans Saints, and has sat out 2 1/2 games since. Dwight missed his second consecutive game, his fourth game of the season and the eighth of his 2 year career. The Falcons lost the game 30-17, dropping their season record to 3-11. The Arizona Cardinals come to Atlanta next week, as the Falcons look to finish their season on a positive note.

Falcon Files report - 12/16/99

Each Thursday night this fall, a station in eastern Iowa has been broadcasting a segment called "The Falcon Files" with Tim Dwight. In each segment, he talks about his situation, talks to teammates, and does some things that we can only expect from Timmy D. I will post a report after every show from here on out.

Thanks to Angie Sammons for sending this in:

-here's what was on the 12-16-99 Falcon Files-
*This one was pretty brief.
*Tim said that he ate sushi and lost money gambling in San Fran. last week.
*He said that he is working to get back on the field.
*This week he asked a question to 3 different people: Ray Buchanan (cornerback), Derrick Gardner (cornerback), and Bob Whitfield (offensive tackle).
*The question to Buchanan was: "Did you cry at the end of Old Yeller?" He answered that yeah, he thinks he teared up.
*The question to Gardner was: "Who was the first president of the United States?" His answer, after a long pause, was "George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Bill Clinton."
*The last question was to Whitfield and his was: "If you were a tree what would you be?" He answered that he'd be a weeping willow because of the the things that the team has been throughout the season.
*It concluded with Buchanan saying that the Hawkeyes have got a great one in Tim Dwight (as if we all didn't know that anyway!).

News for December 14

Tim Dwight did not play in last Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He injured his knee and hamstring in Atlanta's victory over the New Orleans Saints two weeks ago. This was the third game Dwight has missed this season.

News for December 5

Tim Dwight played very well during the Falcons 35-12 thrashing of the New Orleans Saints. Dwight played one half and then left the game with a knee and hamstring injury. Dwight finished the game with 2 catches for 80 yards including a 48 yard touchdown catch, his fifth touchdown catch of the season. He also returned 1 punt for 5 yards, and returned 3 kickoffs for 81 yards. He had 166 all-purpose yards in only one half of action. That raised his season total to 1,552 all-purpose yards. The Falcons' victory raised their record to 3-9, with the Birds traveling to San Francisco to take on the 49ers, who have had a very poor season up to this point. Kickoff is slated for 3:15 P.M. C.S.T.

News for November 28

Tim Dwight had the first 100 yard receiving game of his career in the NFL in the Falcons' 34-28 loss to the Carolina Panthers. He finished with 5 catches for 102 yards, including a 58 yarder which set a personal best. He rushed 1 time for 3 yards, returned 6 kickoffs for 115 yards and returned 2 punts for 15 yards. All in all, he had 235 all-purpose yards, raising his season total to 1,386. The loss dropped the Falcons to 2-9 on the season, with the New Orleans Saints coming to Atlanta next week. The Falcons defeated the Saints 20-17 earlier this year.

News for November 24

Former Hawkeye track and field standouts Bashir Yamini and Tim Dwight shared the Most Valuable Athlete and Outstanding Sprinter awards for the 1999 season at the team's annual banquet earlier this month. Dwight earned his All-America status as a member of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed fourth at the NCAA outdoor meet last June. He was named 1999 Male Athlete of the outdoor Big Ten meet after winning the 100-meters and running on the champion 400 and 1,600-meter relays. Dwight also ran on the 1998 Big Ten outdoor champion 400-meter relay team.

News for November 21

Coming off a bye week, the Falcons started strong but faded in the second half against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Birds jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the 1st quarter, and led 10-6 at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, the Buccaneers added two more field goals, making the score 12-10, as well as an interception return for a touchdown to make the final score 19-10. The debacle that is the Falcons' season continues, and the loss drops them to 2-8.

Tim Dwight scored in his third consecutive game, but this time went into the endzone via the rush. It was his first career rushing touchdown in the NFL, as he raced in from 8 yards out in the first quarter on his only carry of the game. He also caught 4 passes for 20 yards, returned 3 punts for 31 yards and returned 5 kickoffs for 102 yards. He finished the game with 161 all-purpose yards. He now has 1,151 all-purpose yards in 8 games for an average of 144 yards per game. The Falcons travel to North Carolina next week for a Sunday night showdown on ESPN against the Carolina Panthers, whom they beat 27-20 earlier this season. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. CST.

News for November 7

Tim Dwight caught a touchdown pass, his third in two weeks and fourth of the season, in the Falcons' 30-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Dwight had 2 catches for 47 yards with one of those receptions resulting in a 17 yard touchdown. He had 6 kickoff returns for 142 yards, but his return to start the second half was the biggest play of the game. He took the ball on the 1 yard line, and made a spectacular 99 yard return for what appeared to be a touchdown. However, a flag was thrown on Johndale Carty for an illegal block, and the touchdown was negated. That play would have cut the Jaguars lead to 17-14, but instead it remained 17-7 and the Falcons did not score again. Also, Dwight had 2 punt returns for 27 yards. Overall, he had 216 all-purpose yards. The Falcons have a much needed bye week upcoming, and they travel to Florida to challenge the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 21.

On a side note, best wishes go out to Tavian Banks, a Jacksonville running back and former teammate of Tim Dwight at the University of Iowa, who tore his ACL in the 4th quarter of the game and is lost for the season. Get well soon Tavian, and be assured that all of the Hawkeye fans across the country are praying for you....

News for November 3

The following comes from Dan Reeves' press conference on Wednesday, November 2:

Q: Dan, talk about Tim Dwight and how he has come along, especially in the last couple of weeks.

A: Tim really is an explosive player. He plays the game they way it is fun to watch him play, whether it is a return or whether it is offense. He likes to get involved. I think that is the thing that was disappointing, because we really felt like he would be the guy that could step up and give us that from the start, but he was set back with the injury, and I think now he has gotten to a point where he is healthy now, and you can count on him. He is getting better as a receiver, because he is learning how to run routes. He has got good hands and can catch the football, but controlling your speed a lot of times as a receiver is a difficult thing to do, and Tim has done a lot to improve that. I think the quarterbacks are getting more confident in him, knowing that you can count on where he is. He is really smart. You know, we played him at a lot of different positions. He has handled all of that really well. It is just learning now to run the routes and the control and when to turn it on and when to be under control and those types of things.

Q: Dan, how close have you come to replacing Tony Martin with him?

A: Well, I think he has the speed factor. Tony was unusual in that he had the speed, but he also had the height. A guy could be pretty close to him, but yet because of his height, he was really a lot bigger receiver for that size speed. I don’t know that Tim will ever do that, but he is going to be a guy I think that will be a threat to the defense to have to worry about going deep.

Q: Do you see a direct correlation in Dwight being a starter and the running game getting 100 yards last weekend?

A: Oh, I think they definitely help each other, but I don’t know that you can put a measuring stick on that and say okay, yeah this kept them out of eight men fronts. That is what makes it difficult for the running game, because people, they don’t all of a sudden show you the eight man front, they come up into it late, and have to adjust in calling plays and so forth. It has a lot to do with that too; being right sometimes and running plays at the right time and those kind of things. Defenses do a good job of disguising those things. They don’t just come up and say hey we dare you to throw it. Sometimes they are sitting there guessing whether you are going to run it or throw it, and a guy with a deep threat now, where you can’t single cover him and you have to double cover him, that definitely puts pressure on the other team. I don’t know that they have done that yet with Tim. They did it a lot with Terance last week, and there were sometimes that both of those guys got doubled.

Q: How can Tim overcome his height disadvantage?

A: I don’t even look at him as being a short receiver, because he does use his hands extremely well. A lot of people if they cradle the ball, they are a short target, but I don’t thing Tim is a short receiver, because he does extend his hands and is a target, and he runs well. He is a tough guy. He blocks extremely well. He doesn’t mind putting his nose in there anywhere. I think he is going to be a really good receiver. It just takes some time for him to mature. If you take Terance and look at where Terance was when he was in his second year and where he is right now, it is night and day. Receivers probably have more to learn coming from college football into pro football than any position, because of sophisticated coverages that you face now in pro football compared to the coverages that they face in college. I think Tim will continue to get better and better, just like I think Terance has. Terance will tell you, he is still learning things and getting better and better, because of his ability to see things and anticipate things.

Q: When Tim came out of college did you think he was going to be an everyday type of receiver or more of a specialty receiver?

A: Well, I thought he was going to be kind of a specialty kind of receiver. It is very difficult to be a returner and a starting receiver, because you are so worried that you are going to lose the one that you spent a lot of time preparing each week. You’ve got this guy plugged in as a starting receiver, and then he could go down, which we did last year. We lost Tim in some of the things that he brought even as a third receiver, and now moving up to where we think he is our second best receiver now. He has really done a good job, and you have got to even look at his return and see if you get Winslow a little bit more involved and is Byron Hanspard healthy enough also to get involved in our kickoff return. Those are things you have we have to work out. We haven’t had a whole lot of problem figuring them out, because we have had so many injuries, we haven’t had the luxury to say which one are we going to do.

News for October 31

Tim Dwight had a career game at wide receiver in the Falcons' 27-20 victory over the Carolina Panthers. He caught two touchdowns, a 35 yarder in the 1st Quarter and a 4 yarder to seal the game in the 4th Quarter. His totals were 3 catches for 61 yards and a pair of touchdowns, 1 punt return for 11 yards and 4 kickoff returns for 100 yards. He had 172 all-purpose yards for the game. He continued his string of good performances against the Panthers. Last year, he caught the game winning touchdown in Week 1, and returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown in Week 4. The Falcons, now 2-6, host the Jacksonville Jaguars next week in Atlanta.

News for October 25

Tim Dwight made his first career NFL start on this date against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Overall, he played pretty well. He had 3 receptions for 44 yards, rushed 2 times for 8 yards, returned 2 punts for 15 yards, and returned 3 kickoffs for 61 yards. In total, he had 128 all-purpose yards. He made a big catch late in the game, with the Falcons trailing 13-9, to the Steelers' 6 yard line. With only 2 seconds remaining and no timeouts, Chris Chandler attempted to hit Tim Dwight for the game winning touchdown, but the pass was thrown slightly behind Dwight, and he couldn't make the catch. The loss dropped the Falcons record to 1-6, with the Carolina Panthers traveling to Atlanta next Sunday for an NFC West showdown.

News for October 20

Dan Reeves told the press on Wednesday that Tim Dwight will replace Chris Calloway in the starting line-up at wide receiver this Monday in Pittsburgh. He said, "We will make some changes at the receiver position. I think Chris Calloway has been struggling a little bit with his ankle and with his knee. He is one of those guys; he is a warrior. He keeps playing. I think Tim (Dwight) is ready now to step in and is close to being healthy, and so we will put him in at the position there at the receiver to see what he can do."

News for October 17

Despite the Falcons losing to the Rams by a score of 41-13, Tim Dwight played what was by far his best game of the year. He was heavily involved in the offense, playing receiver and even lining up in the backfield on a few plays. Dwight caught 2 passes for 56 yards, rushed 1 time for 9 yards, returned 1 punt for 17 yards and returned 7 kickoffs for 157 yards. At the end of the day, he had 239 all-purpose yards. The Falcons travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers next Monday night, as Atlanta looks for their second victory of the season.

News for October 10

Tim Dwight returned after missing two games with a hamstring injury and returned kicks for the Falcons. He returned 4 kickoffs for a total of 69 yards. He also saw some time at receiver on offense, but did not catch a pass as the Falcons won their first game of the year; a 20-17 triumph over the New Orleans Saints.

News for October 3

Tim Dwight was placed on the inactive list prior to the Falcons 19-13 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens, and did not play. The Falcons fell to 0-4, and continued their downward spiral after the magical Super Bowl season of a year ago.

News for September 26

Tim Dwight did not play in the Falcons' demoralizing 35-7 loss to the St. Louis Rams. He re-injured his hamstring in practice on Friday, and he was not ready to go. With Jamal Anderson already gone for the year, and Chris Chandler and Dwight struggling with hamstring injuries, it could be a long year for the Dirty Birds. Time will tell.....

News for September 24

Tim Dwight aggravated his strained hamstring in practice on Friday. He is listed as questionable for the game this Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. He originally injured the hamstring in pregame warm-ups at the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings, and was limited to punt and kickoff return duties. Despite missing some practice time the next week, he played in the Falcon's Monday night contest against the Dallas Cowboys, and ended up catching a touchdown.

News for September 20

Tim Dwight, still nursing a strained hamstring, caught a touchdown pass in the Falcons' 24-7 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He played one play on offense the entire game, and caught a 45 yard touchdown pass from QB Danny Kannell in the 4th quarter on that play. He also returned 3 kickoffs for 50 yards, and returned one punt for 4 yards, with 2 fair catches. All in all, Dwight had 99 all-purpose yards in very limited action.

News for September 13

Tim Dwight came away with a right hamstring strain yesterday. Dwight suffered his injury in the pregame warmups and was limited to punt and kickoff return action. In other news, Dwight was a captain for yesterday's contest, along with Eugene Robinson, Jessie Tuggle, Chris Chandler and Terance Mathis.

News for September 12

Tim Dwight saw little action on the offensive side of the ball in the Falcons' 17-14 loss to the Vikings. He returned 3 kicks for 67 yards, and had one fair catch on a punt return. He did fumble the ball once on a kick return, and that turnover led to a Viking field goal.

"I enjoy running the ball back as much as anybody, but it's also fun to blow somebody up."
Tim Dwight
