"Nothing and Everything"

Simon J. Ortiz

For three nights the moon
has been so bright through the trees.
It felt like something breaking. It seemed
so fragile, the moments no longer possible.

On this night, the fourth, it is not
like that though I've waited for its light.
And now, there is only the glow
not a promise but the always moon.

The trees

will stand as always, still in winter,
the cold steady forever. Nothing is
that tenuous and only momentary light.

It fades away. It could have been love.
So it was just the moment we caught between
us, nothing but that and everything.

The three nights and one more breaking
our hearts, the moons we've always been.
