The Central Railroad operated over 300 Commute Trains per day bringing people from as far away as Bivale near Delaware Bay and West Jersey to its main terminal in Jersey City. Once the passenger was unboarded from the train a brisk early morning ferry boat ride awaited to complete the last leg of the trip into downtown Manhatten. The photo below tries to capture the scene as a Pacific type steamer # 829, leads its early morning train towards Jersey City from somewhere in New Jersey in the last days of steam before the diesels appear to take their place. |
