| 1. JOHN, EARL OF CRAWFORD, born at Ayrshire, Scotland in 1600 1643 First Crawford to come to America 1676 Killed in Bacon's Rebellion in VA 2. DAVID CRAWFORD, John's only child, born at Ayrshire in 1625 Came with his father to America 1654 Married at James City Co., VA 3.CAPTAIN DAVID CRAWFORD, 4th child of David, born in 1662 1695 Married Elizabeth Smith who lived to be 100 1762 Died in July a few months after his 100th birthday From this couple came numerous progeny, settled in South & West 4. DAVID CRAWFORD, son of Captain David, born in Hanover Co., VA, in 1697 1727 Married Ann Anderson 1766 Died 5. JOEL CRAWFORD, 5th son of David and Ann, born in 1736 At Hanover Co., VA. The family moved in 1750 To Amherst Co., VA, where in 1760 He married Fanny Harris. They had 11 children. 1779 Moved family to Edgefield District, SC, 30 miles north of Augusta, GA 1788 Died in GA after his return from Camden jail where he was thrown by the Tories during the Revolutionary War -- Andrew Jackson was in Camden jail. Joel's 6th child was William Harris Crawford, famous in GA, in US Senate, and ambassador to France. William Harris was brother to 6. DAVID CRAWFORD, Joel's 4th child born in 1767 (Oct 10) 1793 (Sep 12) Married Mary Lee Wood (b Jun 23, 1775). The couple must have died young because their children, John Anderson and Susanna, were raised by David's brother William Harris and wife, Susanna Gerardin Crawford. Cousin, Marthe White, told me about the children's raising as little Susanna was her grandmother. The other child was our great grandfather. 7. JOHN ANDERSON CRAWFORD, son of David was born in 1815 (Nov 17) 1838 Married Emily Hill, cousin of Ben Hill of GA 1858 (Mar 9) Emily died 1865 John died near Austin, TX, where he had refugeed during the Civil War. There he had married a second time. 8. JOHN HENRY CRAWFORD, son of John and Emily was born in GA in 1842 (May 9) 1867 (Mar 11) Married Caroline Harriett Tool (b. Sep 9, 1850 d. Mar 10, 1883 of Southeast Arkansas 1884 (Feb 28) Married Cornelia Frances Cason (Fanny) 1910 (Feb 12) Died at Artesia, NM. Buried there. Mammy (as Fanny was called) died at Pine Bluff, AR, Dec 10, 1913. Their only child, Walter Cason Crawford was born Jun 14, 1885 and died March 19, 1886. CHILDREN OF JOHN AND CAROLINE HARRIETT (Carrie) were: 1. Emily Josephine b. Dec 20, 1867 d. May 19, 1908 2. Susan Elizabeth (My grandmother) b. Mar 20, 1870 d. Jan 3, 1950 3. Charles David b. Jun 14, 1872 d. Oct 27, 1956 4. William Harris b. Aug 23, 1875 d. Jul 15, 1893 5. Georgia Ann (Twin) b. Feb 25, 1878 d. Oct 27, 1928 6. Caroline Harriett (Twin) b. Feb 25, 1878 d. Dec 24, 1883 7. John Henry, Jr. b. Jan 24, 1881 d. Nov 10, 1963 9. SUSAN ELIZABETH CRAWFORD, married William Pearson Whaley (1869-1956) in 1893 (Oct 3) They had six children: Jean (1894-1895), Ruth Lois (1896-1917), Carrie Mae (1899-1981), William Crawford (1902-1990), Elizabeth Ann (1908-1976) Margaret Sue (My mother)(1911-1974) 10. MARGARET SUE WHALEY, married William Norton Gentry (1908-1991) on May 25, 1938. They had three children: Fred (b.&d.1946), Susan Margaret (b. 1947), William David (Me) (b. 1949) 11. SUSAN MARGARET GENTRY, married William Andrew Culley (b. 1942) on May 11, 1974 at Williamburg, VA. They have three sons: Oliver (b. Jul 28, 1976), Peter (b. May 26, 1978) & Timothy (b. Jun 20, 1980) |
