ใช้กล่าวถึงการกระทำหรือเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นในขณะที่พูด
 

  บรรยายการกระทำที่เกิดขึ้นในขณะนั้นโดยสังเกตจากเครื่องหมาย ! (เครื่องหมายแสดงความตกใจ)

Look! Someone is falling off the tree.
ดูซิ! คนกำลังตกต้นไม้

Listen! Somebody is crying for help.
ฟังซิ คนกำลังร้องไห้ขอความช่วยเหลือ

บางครั้งเราใช้ present continuous tense กล่าวถึงการกระทำในช่วงเวลาในปัจจุบัน
Are you still working for the same company?

คุณยังคงทำงานที่บริษัทเดิมหรือเปล่า
         

ใช้กล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์ที่จะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตอันใกล้ได้
 

 I'm meeting my boyfriend tonight

 ฉันจะไปพบกับเพื่อนชายของฉันคืนนี้

ใช้กับการกระทำที่เกิดขึ้นบ่อยๆได้เมื่อมีคำว่า always 

Linda is always complaining.    ลินดาชอบบ่นเป็นประจำ    

หมายเหตุ

คำกริยาที่ไม่ใช่ action verb (กริยาที่มีการกระทำ) ไม่ใช้ในรูปประโยค present continuous tense เช่น (feel, hear, taste, smell, see, know, believe, understand, recognize, remember, mean, possess, own, belong, want, prefer, need, appreciate, love, like, hate, dislike, seem, appear)  

ถ้าหากต้องการใช้คำเหล่านี้แสดงการกระทำในตามความหมายของ present continuous tense ให้ใช้ในรูปประโยค simple present tense แทน เช่น

She is loving me. (present continuous tense) ให้ใช้ในรูปประโยค (simple present tense) แทนดังนี้  She loves me.                  

I am understanding the question. ให้ใช้  I understand the question.

ถ้าหากใช้คำเหล่านี้ในรูปประโยค continuous tenses ความหมายของประโยคอาจจะเปลี่ยนไป เช่น

         Tim is feeling much better now.

        หมายความว่า ขณะนี้สุขภาพของทิมดีขึ้น ไม่ใช่ ทิมกำลังรู้สึกดีขึ้น

         She is having supper. (She's eating = รับประทาน)

         หมายความว่า หล่อนกำลังรับประทานอาหาร ไม่ใช่หล่อนกำลังมีอาหาร

         I'm seeing Tim in the garden. (I am planning to meet= การวางแผน)

         หมายความว่า ฉันวางแผนจะไปหาทิมในสวน ไม่ใช่ ฉันกำลังเห็นทิมในสวน เป็นต้น

Active Voice / Passive Voice

ACTIVE:     Tom is writing the letter now.
                     ทอมกำลังเขียนจดหมาย

PASSIVE:   The letter is being written by Tom now.
                  จดหมายกำลังถูกเขียนโดยทอม
