The Orange Bird was different than other birds. He looked different, and he couldn't speak or sing like other birds could. He had a special way of thinking. He thought orange thoughts - and because they were nice thoughts, he enjoyed looking at them after he thought them.

One day the Orange Bird went to a park. He met some other birds there and tried to sing with them. All that came out was one big orange note in the air. the others all laughed at him. He felt very lonesome indeed

It certainly was discouraging, the Orange Bird thought. (This didn't show up as an orange word because he couldn't spell discouraging.)
The Orange Bird decided to take a trip. He thought he would go south where it was warm and sunny, and perhaps he could make new friends there.
Like most travelers in this crowded world, he didn't get far before he came to a city.

It was very exciting and after his first day exploring the city, he was so tired he fell asleep in a box in an alley. When he awoke, he was looking into a very unfriendly face. It belonged to a cat!

He would have been in real trouble, but he immediately thought of an orange mouse just about his own size.

The alley cat sprang on the orange mouse and got a mouthful of orange smoke for his trouble, while the Orange Bird flew safely away.

Being alone in a big city without friends is not very much fun. How he would have liked a friendly face and then - suddenly - he saw one. Off in the distance he saw a birdhouse hanging from a wire, and there was an orange bird in it.

He sped toward this friendly sight but just as he got close, the orange bird disappeared and a bright red light flashed at him. With a flurry of feathers he came to a startled halt in mid-air and then zoomed skyward and soon left the city far behind.

As he flew, he suddenly realized he was over the picnic park again. This time a family was having a picnic. They seemed so nice he dropped to the ground and hopped closer until he attracted the childrens attention.
The Orange Bird thought up a big orange "I Love You" to try to tell the family his feeling for them. But the father told the children that they all had a long drive ahead of them, and he didn't want to take an orange bird along which might fill the car with orange smoke.

The family piled into their car and drove off down the highway. The Orange Bird felt so bad at seeing them go that he flew along the same highway. Faster and faster he went until he was way ahead of them.

Around a sharp turn in the road, the Orange Bird came upon a bridge which had been washed out by the winter storms.

He had to warn his friends. Thinking as hard as he ever ha, he thought up a huge orange stop sign. The father slammed on his brakes just in time..

Well, as you can imagine, it was a very happy and grateful family, and the Orange Bird never had to worry about a home again.
