Department H

[Storm]

Logan's respect for Storm had grown consierably since his early days on the team, and during a Danger Room session he told her, "I'm beginning ta think Charley made the right decision when he named you tram leader after Cyclops left."
"Wolverine," Xavier thundered, "call me 'Professor,' 'Professor X,' 'Professor Xavier,' or even, if you must, 'Charles.' But not 'Charley.' Is that understood?"
"Sure, Chuck." [Prof X]
But Logan was only indulging his taste for irreverence; his resentment towards Xavier's leadership was long gone by now. Momemts later, addressing Xavier as "Professor," he told him he wanted to take a short leave of absence to resolve his situation with the Canadian government. Xavier commended Logan on showing the sign of responsibility, and Nightcrawller agreed to accompany him on the trip (Uncanny X-Men #139-140).
Logan did not realize that the Canadian prime minister had already rescinded the order for his arrest, but he nontheless still had unfinished business back home. He wanted to be reconciled with James and Heather Hudson. They had been his closest friends before joining the X-Men; he did not want to lose them. [Heather Hudson] [James Hudson]
Soon afterward, Heather Hudson returned home from work to find her front door open. thinking there was a burglar inside, she seized a broom as a weapon and charged in, only to find Logan and Nightcrawler lounging inside. "Hiya, sexy," Logan said. "How ya been?"
Heather burst out in disbelief and surprise. "Logan! Oh, it's so good to see you! It's been so long!" Logan picked her up affectionately.
No, he had not lost Heather as a friend. Logan was unsure how he would greet James after the bitterness of their recent battles was far from clear.
Nightcrawler, meanwhile, realized that yet another piece of the puzzle of Logan's life mysterious past had just fallen into his lap. "Wolverine," he ventured. "she called you Logan? Is that your name?"
"Yup."
"You never told us."
"You never asked."
Logan instructed Nightcrawler, "Make nice with the lady. Till I met you clowns, she an' Mac were the only two friends I ever had."
"Logan," Heather begn warily, "You're not here to fight Mac again, are you?"
"I came to make peace, Heather. If I can."
"Good," she replied. "We three have been apart too long."
James Hudson, as Vindicator, was up in the North country near Hudson Bay with Shaman and Snowbird. They were tracking down the man-eating creature known as Wendigo, whom Logan had fought long before. Logan and Nightcrawler went north to see him. [Wendigo]
Vindicator moved as if to attack when he saw Logan, but Logan told him he wasn't wiling to start something. Thus, vindicator entered into a wary truce with Logan, who volunteered to help them against the Wendigo.
logan consciously allowed himself to go into a beserker rage in his savage battle with the Wendigo. But it was Snowbird who defeated this creature by using her shape-shifting powers to turn into an actual wolverine herself. In this form, her normal personality was overwhelmed by bestial ferocity, and it was Logan who calmed her, enabling her to revert to her normal form. He knew what it was like to have one's humanity suppressed by the urge to kill.
As Logan had hoped, working on this mission together was the first step to rebuilding his friendship with James Hudson. Now they shook hands. "And now that you're a free man," Hudson told him, "come visit me and Heather more often. We're your friends, Logan. We care about you. We miss you."
Logan seemed unusually subdued and moved by his old friend's words. "I know, Mac. And.. I will." But it is not known whether Logan ever did manage to visit James Hudson again before his sudden death many months later.
Shaman succeeded in transforming the Wendigo back into his human form, Georges Baptiste. but, although Baptiste had not been able to prevent Wendigo from killing, he was placed under arrest to stand trial for murder.
Ironically, shortly after this, Department H discontinues its super-hero program altogether, although it will be periodically revived in later years.

Nightcrawler

[Wolverine]

Nightcrawler, who had never forgotten seeing Logan attack the guard in the Savage Land, observed, "Baptiste, as Wendigo, killed. Now he must pay the price. And you, Wolverine, should you not pay a price as well?"
Calmly, Logan responded, "Kurt, in my life I've been two things: a wartime soldier and a secret agent. As one, my government paid me to kill. As the other, they licened me to kill. I was very good at both jobs. They liked that - an' I got the medals to prove it.
A man comes at me with fists, I'll meet him with fists. But if he pulls a gun - or threatens people I'm protectin' - then I got no sympathy for him. He made his choice. He'll have to live - or die - with it." He then explained that he doesn't uses his claws on someone who hadn't tried to kill him, only in self-defense.
"I understand, Logan," Nightcrawler began slowly. "What you say is reasonable, logical, justifiable. But does it make it right?"
Logan did not answer. And Nightcrawler said nothing more. There was no bridging the moral gulf that existed between them. That issue would come into fore again soon.

Days of Future Past

Kitty enters the danger room by accident, assuming that as the door was unlocked the training session hadn't begun (Uncanny X-Men #141-42). The X-Men stop their training session in order to save her, but unfortunately the danger room doesn't know the session is over and keeps throwing threats at everyone, including Kitty. Nightcrawler reaches the panic button a split second before a piledriver is about to flatten Kitty and an unarmored Colossus.
She then attempts her first solo training session, walking through the entire danger room in her phased state, meaning not a single weapon has any effect on her. As she exits, she falls unconscious as her future self exchanges consciousnesses with her. [Kelly]
The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (today called the Freedom Force) battles the X-Men, in an attempt to save Senator Kelly, and all are captured except Mystique (or Rogue, who wasn't present). Logan nearly kills Pyro, though he is rescued at the last moment by Storm. "Wolverine, sheathe your claws - or use them on me!"
Immediately, Logan lost his temper. "That can be arranged, babe!" And Storm knew he meant it; he was beginning to lose control of himself again.
She stood her ground, and won - this time. But the problem was larger than Logan's attitude toward killing; it was his sometimes uncontrollable urge to kill that was a threat even to himself and his friends.
Kitty's mind returns to it's own time. She was unconscious throughout her entire trip to the future, and remembers nothing.

The Beast Within

A little while later, Nightcrawler began playfully flirting with Mariko while she was visiting Xavier's mansion. Logan flew into a sudden beserker rage, and only Nightcrawler's ability to teleport saved him from Logan's claws. Once his fury was past, he sank deeply into shame. He hesitantly apologized to his friend. "I'm sorry, I lost my head. I guess the old ways, the old habits, die a lot harder than we figured. Mine are a killer's instincts. Always have been. Always will be. I thought - I hoped - that could be changed. I was wrong." [Dr Doom]
A short time after this incident, Logan became the prisoner of a ronot constructed in the inage of its master, Doctor Victor von Doom. The Doom simulacrum placed Logan in a room whose lights overwhelmed and disoriented his senses, threatening once again to destroy his all too insecure sanity. Logan fell prey to his dread of the uncontrollable madman he could become. He recalled how he had once almost killed his best friends, the Hudsons, years before. And he did not even remember what had set off his killing rage.
Now he recalled how he thought for a while that he had gotten his psychotic tendencies under control. "But lately that control has been slippin'. I'm becomin' as much a danger to the X-Men as to the creeps we fight."

[Danvers]

In order to keep the X-Men safe from possible Government action against mutants, Kitty comes up with the idea of a computer virus to wipe all records of them from Federal computers. Logan, Storm, and Carol Danvers go to the Pentagon in order to erase its files on the X-Men. While there, they run into Rogue and Raven Darkholme (Mystique). Raven secretly follows Danvers while Rogue battles the X-Men. Raven is eager to settle old scores and to kill Carol, and shoots her while in the form of Nick Fury, though Carol fools her and they tussle. Danvers wins, and though she swears to kill Mystique for all that's been done to her, she simply has her arrested. Mystique vows revenge, and Carol reflects on her mercy, realizing that Mystique will always try to come after her (Uncanny X-Men #158).

Japan

[Yukio]

During a later trip to Japan, Logan first meets the woman known as Yukio (Wolverine Limited Series #2), a free-spirited adventurer who has much in common with Logan's earlier persona; Logan also briefly clashes with the Hand for the first known time since initially assuming the identity of Wolverine, although, perhaps initially mistrusting Yukio, he feigns an unfamiliarity with the organization.
Despite an immediate attraction to Yukio, Logan becomes engaged to Mariko Yashida (Wolverine Limited Series #4), although the marriage is called off because Yashida feels obliged to break her family's criminal ties before marrying Logan (Uncanny X-Men #173). Mariko vows to end Yashida ties to the Yakuza before marrying Logan (Uncanny X-Men #176)
While again visiting Japan not long afterward, in the aftermath of an adventure in space with the X-Men, Logan, assisting in rescue operations when Japan is attacked by an alien dragon who accompanied the X-Men from space, rescues a young girl named Akiko (Uncanny X-Men #181), of whom he will later become guardian.

[Ogun]

Months later, one of Logan's fellow X-Men, Shadowcat, travels to Japan alone after she about her father's connections to the Yakuza. There, she is victimized by Logan's sensei Ogun, brainwashed, and train as his ninja disciple. The brainwashed Kitty attacks Logan. Logan trains Kitty to counteract Ogun's influence. Shadowcat fights to resist Ogun's influence. Logan helps Kitty break free of Ogun's thrall. (Kitty Pryde and Wolverine #1-6) Ogun will return on several occasions to plague Logan again. [Heather Hudson]
Heather flies across Canada to the X-Men in Westchester and is knocked out by Magneto, attacking from reflex. Storm leaves her in Logan's hands. Heather explains that she wants Logan to teach her to fight. Logan tells her that being a hero doesn't mean having powers, and just then they are attacked by Deathstrike's samurai. Deathstrike claims Logan's skeleton, since the adamantium technology was stolen from her father, whom she later killed. Heather suspects that Mac was involved, and that they didn't come across Logan by accident. Logan and Heather best Deathstrike's samurai, but the lady herself bears an indestructible blade and duels Logan. Deathstrike shatters her blade against Heather's suit. (Alpha Flight #33-34)
Katie Power helps Logan face Lady Deathstrike during a blizzard. (Uncanny X-Men #205)

[--]

While blowing off steam at a bar, Wolverine runs into a blonde woman, and they flirt, dance, and eventually go back to her motel room. Though Mystique attempts to play around with him by morphing into women from his past and evading his questions, he eventually gets her to admit that she's shaken up about something, so frightened of a particular woman that she doesn't even want to speak her name. However, eventually Logan does say Spiral's name aloud, and true to form, the time-dancer appears, brandishing her swords. Spiral
Mystique and Wolverine listen to Spiral's ravings, certain she is completely insane. In actuality, Spiral is aware of a crisis created by Mojo in the time-space continuum, one which will ultimately destroy the universe. After battling a plasma wraith at the motel, the three go to the Citadel at the End of Time, where they encounter another wraith who gives them more trouble, although it is distracted long enough by Mystique's impersonation of Mojo for the others to destroy it. Spiral tells them time is almost at an end, and that the three of them must work to stop Mojo in order to save the universe. Mystique, Spiral, and Wolverine encounter Mojo and realize he's destroying the universe by preventing the destruction of it (thereby preventing its creation in the Big Bang. Very convoluted). Gateway is able to let them know what they must do, and so Wolverine sends his companions to procure a necessary cruise missile from the android Elsie-Dee. They are successful, and it presumably destroys the future in order to re-create the past, though all of their memories of this future fade and they are left wondering what has just happened (Wolverine #51-3). Mariko Yashida
Some time later, Mariko Yashida is poisoned, and, obeying her request for a death without suffering, Logan kills the woman he has loved more than any other (Wolverine #57).
