Heritage

Graydon Creed

A reporter uncovers the truth that Sabretooth is Graydon Creed's father (and is afterwards killed for this information by Bastion). Mystique is sitting at X-Factor headquarters, watching Creed on television. She muses to herself that it's necessary to kill him in order to "ensure the United States doesn't become a giant graveyard for mutants", though she quickly puts her gun away when Forge arrives. (Uncanny X-Men 339)

Zero Tolerance

Sabretooth manages to tear off his restraining collar just as Val is informed by a government man that he was placed on X-Factor to kill them if they got out of control. The man tells her to save them if she can, and she rushes off to their rescue. Sabretooth gets out of his cell and attacks Wildchild, severely injuring him. He then wounds Polaris and destroys Shard's holo-matrix, which causes her to disappear. Upstairs, Mystique and Forge are still talking about having a relationship, when Sabretooth comes after them too, and slashes them both. He tells them that they've been set up by the government, that it doesn't trust them any more than it does him, and that now it's time for them to die. He mentions to Mystique that she's been offered a similar deal to the one he's got, but attacks her again anyway. When Val arrives some time later, she finds a dying team, and a threatening message written in their blood. Mystique blames Val for bringing this upon them. (X-Factor 136)
As Operation: Zero Tolerance begins, X-Factor is brought into an emergency room for treatment. Val blames herself for allowing Sabretooth to be placed on the team, but her ex-husband Edmond Atkinson disagrees. Mystique escapes, presumably to go after Sabretooth for revenge. At the same time, Sabretooth is on the loose and goes after Trevor Chase's family, killing the parents. Before he can kill Trevor, another Hound named Stone intervenes, rescuing the boy and telling Sabretooth that his mission was only to kidnap him. Stone takes Trevor away, saying that Sabretooth must join the Hounds or be hunted by them. (X-Factor 137)
Whilst Sabretooth is on the loose and getting into all sorts of trouble, some federal agents discover a bound woman in the trunk of a car. It's Mallory Brickman, the wife of Senator Ralph Brickman (Graydon Creed's former running mate), and she claims to have been kidnapped and held captive by Sabretooth. Her husband swears that the villain will be found and apprehended, and as she goes into the washroom to freshen up, she morphs into Mystique and declares her intent to have revenge on Sabretooth. (X-Factor 138)
'Mallory Brickman' tells FBI agent Vargas about her "kidnapping" at the hands of Sabretooth, while her daughter Gloria looks on suspiciously. The following day, Ralph introduces Mallory to Val Cooper, who has joined the investigation into the 'kidnapping'. Val thinks Mallory seems familiar, and discusses with the couple her mission to track down Sabretooth and Mystique, much to Mallory's annoyance. (X-Factor 139)
Mystique repeats her intention to kill Senator Kelly, whilst carrying out several other plans at the same time. She then goes to Muir Island in the guise of Moira MacTaggert, and encourages the X-Men to investigate her activities; when Rogue and two others arrive, they're caught in an explosion on the island. Meanwhile, the rest of the Brotherhood attacks Senator Kelly. (Uncanny X-Men 388)
The plot to kill Senator Kelly has been foiled by Pyro (Cable 87), but half the Brotherhood is still loose on Muir Island. After rescuing Wolfsbane from Sabretooth, Bishop encounters Mystique, who is impersonating Senator Kelly and talking about the superiority of mutants over humans. She escapes when Wolverine intervenes, and manages to shoot Wolfsbane with the Neutralizer gun. (Bishop 16)

Loss of Adamantium

Magneto began to offer haven for mutants around the world. His space station, Asteroid M, was rebuilt (X-Men #1-3). Over time, more and more mutants decided to join Magneto in his beliefs- his "Acolytes". Soon, the governments of the world feared that Magneto would attack from his orbiting outpost. The X-Men planned an attack designed to stop Magneto, possibly for the last time. After arriving on the station, the battle began. Xavier and Jean fought Magneto mentally. But, in an unplanned move, Wolverine attacked Magneto. This resulted in Magneto ripping the adamantium from Wolverine's skeleton. In retaliation, Xavier used his own metal powers to reduce Magneto to a vegetative mental state. (X-Men #25).
Barely surviving the ordeal, Logan was almost afraid to face the Danger Room workout. While training, he was shocked to discover that his claws were actually bone, and not pure metal as originally believed (Wolverine #75). The adamantium, it was later revealed, was preventing his mutation from expanding any further. In this case, that meant his turning into pure animal, with the unbearably heightened senses and uncontrollable instincts (Wolverine #92).
Believing he could not pull his own weight, Wolverine then left the X-Men. He returned after he was asked by Xavier, who also asked the mutant Cable, to rescue the X-Men in Tibet, where they were captured during the Phalanx invasion.

Age of Apocalypse

[Sabretooth]

As time progressed, Wolverine learned that Professor Xavier had taken Sabretooth into the X-Men's mansion. Determined to stop Sabretooth for good, Wolverine enter Sabretooth's holding cell and extended a claw into Sabretooth's brain (Wolverine #90).
At that moment, however, their reality was transformed into the Age of Apocalypse. Wolverine was transformed into a freedom fighter-Weapon X, and Sabtetooth was transformed into a member of the Astonishing X-Men (X-Men Alpha). In this reality, Logan still had his adamantium skeleton, but he lost his left hand during a fight with the government agent Cyclops. Logan/Weapon X helped score many victories against Apocalypse before reality returned to normal.
The damage Wolverine had done to Sabretooth had not been fatal, but it pushed Wolverine over the edge: he was further losing his humanity. (X-Men Prime). Again he left the X-Men.

Death

Logan originally adapted to his life with bone claws quite well. His healing factor became more intense, partially compensating for his lack of metal.
However, Tyler Dayspring, calling himself Genesis, wanted to make Wolverine one of his new Horsemen. Genesis had acquired adamantium by destroying the body of the mercenary known as Cyber, and had planned to recreate the bonding process used on Logan years ago. Unfortunately, Logan did want the adamantium. Cannonball made a desperate attempt to 'save' Logan and ended being severally beaten. This gave Logan the motivation to reject the adamantium so he could save Cannonball. Sadly this also caused Wolverine to degenerate into a feral beast who killed Genesis and all his followers (Wolverine #100).
Since then with the help of the people around him Logan has clawed back all his humanity. Elektra took it upon herself (Wolverine #101) to help Logan return to humanity, and it mostly worked. To make matters worse, Sabretooth had been the recipient of Wolverine's old adamantium.

Recent Years

Logan became disenchanted with the X-Men. He was also at odds with Professor Xavier ever since the Professor forcibly stopped him from killing Magneto after a huge battle at the North Pole. Logan took heavy beatings at the hands of Sabertooth and Wendigo, to name but a few. Time after time Wolverine was being faced with the fact that he is not as able as he one was and almost developed a longing to have his adamantium returned.
Wolverine had his adamantium returned when Apocalypse kidnapped him from a space ship as the X-Men returned to earth. Replaced by a brainwashed Skrull the real Wolverine had to battle Sabretooth for the dubious honour of being the Horseman Death. Defeated his nemesis Wolverine was given both adamantium (which was ripped out from Sabretooth) and the identity of Death. The Skrull imposter fooled all the X-Men including the Professor probably because he had been conditioned so well he actually believed he was Wolverine. As Death Logan defeated the X-Men a number of times before his close friends and a little psi-power was able to bring Logan's personality back to the surface.
Having recovered from the High Evolutionary's attempts to neutralize the X-Factor, Logan is now working in The X-Men in Rogue's group. It appears now that Apocalypse's conditioning is again begining to have an effect on Logan's behaviour.
