| Tobacco smoking claims more lives than all other deaths combined. Each year in the U.S.A. over 430 thousand adults die from tobacco related diseases. These diseases include asthma, emphysema, heart disease, stroke, and many types of cancer. Each day 3,000 children begin to smoke. Tobacco smoking costs the health care business over 89 billion dollars every year while the tobacco companies spend over 8 billion to advertise cigarettes. We know that advertising works because the brands that most people smoke are the ones they advertise - Marlboro, Camel, Newport, and Virginia Slims. The nicotine in tobacco is more addicting than heroin! Most adults who do smoke want to quit but can have an extremely difficult time doing so. For most, it takes at least three attempts before one is able to quit. If a quitter makes it to their two year anniversary their chances of staying off from smoking are great! |
