The purpose of this lesson is to aquire new skills and tools for an exciting web surfing adventure and to utilize the internet as a valuable resource for health education. |
Surfing the web is not only harmless but exciting! You can explore new web sites and learn new things without injury or getting wet! |
Web surfing students will acquire new web surfing tools by downloading free software on to their personal home computers. |
Web surfing students will explore new web sites on their computer after viewing their new software and reading instructions. |
Web surfing students will learn new web surfing skills after reading "Web Surfering Tips" about search engines during this lesson. |
Web surfing students will become "Professional Web Surfers" by adding a web site to the link page and by accepting the official "Health Web Surfing Certificate" at the end of this lesson after answering questions via email. |
45 minutes for the lesson and up to 7 days per week for surfing - it's entirely your choice! |

In addition to library resources, learning about search engines can enhance your web surfing abilities. "Alexa" operates with your Explorer browser while "Web Ferret" is an individual software. "Alexa" is great for tracking web sites that have similar content to the web site that you are veiwing on "Explorer". With "Web Ferret" you will retreive up to 500 web sites were you will have to sift through to find legitimate content, but it can be very helpful. |
Another great method is copy and paste! When you find a great web page, highlight the web address in the address bar, click onto edit, and copy. Then bring up "Microsoft Word" or any other word processor, place your curser onto the page, click onto edit, and paste it onto a blank page. This way, you can save it as a resource for all your research topics. You can bring up a saved topic that you researched and present a list of all your web sources. In addition, you can click on to any listing with your mouse and bring up each web page. Save your page in a file on your computer or onto a disk for transporting |

This lesson is designed for health professionals who have basic internet skills, your own home computer and health education interests. If you do not meet this criteria, please ask for help from a qualified adult and follow the guidelines set by your school policy on internet use. |
