All the talk about Singer's baby got me thinking...
what if.......

Webb could not believe this was happening. He did not
think it would happen so fast. Was he ready for this?
With his hands in his pockets he paced back and forth
feeling nervous. Very nervous. His suspicions about
her had been confirmed.
He knew there had been something different about her
when he spent that last Sunday with her. Now he didn't
have to wonder anymore. Now it was a fact. The though
of what would take place in a few months made him
really nervous. But this was it. After all this time,
it was really going to happen. He was going to be a
father.
Clayton looked at the reflection on the mirror and
smiled. If his co-workers knew how he was feeling
right now they would laugh at him. If the folks at JAG
knew how proud he felt, they would call him crazy.
But Webb could not help it, he already felt like a
father. A proud father.
Clayton ran his fingers through his hair. Soon he was
going to be responsible for a new little being.
Webb continued to pace back and forth in his living
room. He wondered what kind of mother she would be.
Had he picked the right one? Did he make a good
choice? It was to late to think about the
consequences now. There was no going back.
But he still wondered....she had such a bad temper,
such a strong personality. She was always moody and
too
independent. Always a loner. The only person she was
close to was him. He was the only one that really knew
her. He knew she had a soft side and he knew how to
handle her.
Clayton could not stop pacing. Maybe now that she was
going to be a mother she would be more docile, maybe
it would slow her down. Make her more agreeable to
everyone.
Oh what was he thinking? She was not going to change.
If she could tell him right now how she really felt
about her pregnancy, he was willing to bet she would
not be happy. Not at all.
"I better call mother and give her the news."
Clayton dialed his mother's number and sat down. How
would his mother react?
Webb looked at the photo on the piano. It was his
favorite photo of the two of them together. He had
fallen in love with her the first day he saw her strut
by. Her head up high, so sure of herself. Everyone
always stared at her and got out of her way when she
walked by. He liked that about her. And now... well
now she would be the one to give him his first....
"Oh hi mom!" Clayton took a deep breath when he
heard his mother answer the phone.
"Sweetheart, how nice to hear from you. How are you
doing?"
"Oh packing, you know how that goes"
"Any idea how long you will be gone?" The news of
Clayton's new assignment had hit Porter very hard, but
she was dealing with it the best she could.
"Not really. I guess until the Director gets over his
anger"
"I still think he was wrong. If he knew Commander Rabb
better, he would have been able to see that the way
you handled it was better than whatever Rabb was going
to do next"
"Mother, it doesn't matter anymore. I have bigger news
now"
"What is it darling?"
"Well mother .... I probably should have told you
right away.... but I wanted to make sure it was true
before I told you."
"Is something wrong?"
"No, not at all. Eventhough she may not agree with
that statement."
"She? Clayton is this about your....did Lauren call?"
"Yes. It happened mother. I am going to be a father!"
"Oh my goodness!" Porter was thrilled with the news.
"I kind of suspected it already, but wanted to be sure
before telling you"
"Oh Clayton, this is wonderful!"
"Yes, but mother, the timing is terrible. Now of all
times, when I am going so far away. I will not even be
here when the time comes and..."
"Oh sweetheart, are you sure you can't change the
director's mind? This is something so special!"
"I don't think he would care about this at all mother.
Besides, I do love her, but not enough to sacrifice
my career for her!" Clayton laughed.
"Oh Clayton you are terrible! You should be there for
your first..."
"Mother, I agree. I should be there but it is not
possible. You will have to make sure you send me
photos after the birth"
"I can't believe it. I am going to be a grandmother!"
"Oh mother, don't over do it" Clayton laughed again.
He could not believe he was feeling so excited and
nervous about this.
"Mother, I can't help to be worried about her. This is
her first and ..."
"I will take care of her. I will make sure she has
all the care she needs and that she takes it easy."
"Mother, you seem to forget who we are talking about.
She is very independent. She will not let anyone near
her and she will probably bite the hand of anyone that
gets close to her when the time comes"
"Oh Clayton you are so bad!" They both laughed.
Porter could not disagree with her son. The
mother-to-be was known for her bad temper.
"I wish you were going to be there, Clayton . You have
such an effect of on her, it would be easier on her
and it would be a great experience for you. There is
nothing like it."
"I know. I hate it that I am going to miss the birth
But I know Lauren can handle it."
"I'll have to stop by this weekend and visit the
mother-to-be. I will take her a little treat."
"She would love that. You know mother, at first I had
my doubts about this. But I think it will be fun
having a little one running around."
"I'm happy for you Clayton. Have you thought of any
names?"
"Not really. Though I had a dream last night, and the
name Webbie came to mind" Clayton tried not to laugh.
"WEBBIE????? Have you lost you mind Clayton Webb?
What kind of name is Webbie?"
"I thought it sounded kind of fun" Clayton chuckled.
"Fun? You cannot give your first foal a name like
that. It needs something distinguished!"
"But mother" Clayton laughed.
"Besides, I don't think Mrs. Lauren Meyers would be
happy with a name like Webbie for her Stallion's first
foal!"
"Lauren was paid for her Stallion's breeding services
and I think I can talk her into it. Webbie is a good
name." Clayton loved teasing his mother.
"Clayton, it is no wonder Midnight Sky keeps throwing
you off!"
"Maybe now that she is going to be a mother she will
behave better."
"Don't count on it, Clayton." They both laughed.
"I hope I picked the right mare for this. I;m stillnot
sure"
"Oh she is a beautiful, strong, healthy mare. You made
the right choice, Clayton."
"I hope so. I better go mother. I want to go check on
the stables before she comes back from the
veterinarian."
"You are going to be a good father, Clayton. And who
knows maybe someday you will get around to having real
babies"
"Mother, do not start. Having a new foal in the family
is stressing me out enough! Love you. Talk to you
later."
Clayton hanged up the phone. He looked at the photo of
him riding 'Midnight Sky'. His favorite mare was going
to have a foal. He smiled again.
"I'm going to be a father."
