“No Way But By Blood”
John 6:53-63
By Pastor StepheN Mack HowarD
I. Introduction
a. Our hymnology is full of blood ref.:
i. What Can wash away my sin? Nothing but the ________ of Jesus!
ii. There is power, power, wonder working power in the ________
iii. There is a fountain filled with _____ drawn from Emmanuel’s veins.
iv. Alas and did my Savior ______ and did my Soveriegn die?
v. Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power, are you washed in the _____ of the Lamb?
vi. Down at the cross where my Savior died……there to my heart was the ______ applied
vii. Redeemed how I love to proclaim it, redeemed by the _______ of the Lamb.
b. In fact there are 37 songs listed in our Baptist Hymnal that tell of the blood of Christ and the power it has.
c. Blood is mentioned 342 times in the Bible, averaging over 40 times a book
i. OT 255 times
ii. NT 87 times
II. The life of the Body is in the blood
a. John 6:53ff
53So
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless
you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in
yourselves. 54“He who eats My flesh
and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55“For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56“He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I
in him. 57“As the living Father sent
Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live
because of Me. 58“This is the bread
which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate and died; he who eats
this bread will live forever.” 59These
things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum. 60Therefore many of His
disciples, when they heard this said, “This is a difficult statement;
who can listen to it?” 61But Jesus, conscious that His disciples
grumbled at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to
stumble? 62“What then if you see
the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? 63“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing;
the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
i. Notice that Jesus starts off with the offensive and finishes with the application
ii.
Flesh
indicates a partaker of that which is sinful (sarx) in Christ, or the opposite
of saying partaker of righteousness and his life.
iii.
Blood
indicates a partaker of the only substance that can truly clean inside as we
will see in the following verses…
b. Lev 17:10f
i. 10‘And any man from the house of Israel, or from the aliens who sojourn among them, who eats any blood, I will set My face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people. 11‘For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.’
ii. Blood is for atonement not for ingestion
iii. Blood is the only appeasement for the Justice of God (propitiation)
iv. This last part tells us why bulls and goats are not sufficient, the life of animals is different from the life of humans
c. & Duet 12:23
i. 23“Only be sure not to eat the blood, for the blood is the life, and you shall not eat the life with the flesh. 24“You shall not eat it; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. 25“You shall not eat it, so that it may be well with you and your sons after you, for you will be doing what is right in the sight of the LORD. 26“Only your holy things which you may have and your votive offerings, you shall take and go to the place which the LORD chooses. 27“And you shall offer your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the LORD your God; and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the LORD your God, and you shall eat the flesh.
III. Flesh and Blood will not inherit the kingdom
a. 1 Cor 15:50
i. 50Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
ii. So as we are apart from God, it is the blood that can draw us near
iii. Our works are finite and displeasing to an infinite God
iv. Our inheritance is a Spiritual inheritance and guaranteed by the Spirit Himself
IV. The Benefits of Christ’s blood
a. Eph 1:7
i. 7In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
ii. Christ’s blood is unique in its function and nothing else works like it
b. Eph 2:13
i. 13But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
ii. Here we see the mending property of Christ’s blood as well as its properties of unification
c. Col 1:20
i. 19For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 20and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.
ii. Christ’s blood cleanses everything in creation
d. Heb 9:12
i.
12and
not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He
entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 13For
if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who
have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, 14how
much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to
serve the living God?
ii. This is one of four commands that were stressed in the Council in Acts 15
iii. The blood is a unique substance that tied the rest of the body parts together. 23 seconds is all it takes to get circulate something in the blood to the rest of the body. Dr. DeHaan states that is quite a miracle indeed that the blood not only supplies nutrients but also removes waste and ponders the questions would we allow our garbage man to deliver our groceries. The blood is truly amazing in its design and function.
e. Heb 9:22
i. 22And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
ii. The purpose of blood here is clear, it is for forgiveness of sin, shown typically in the healing power of blood.
V. We started off talking about the Hymns we sing about the blood but do you know the bible says that we will sing a New song someday:
a. Rev 5:9
i.
And
they sang* a new song, saying:
“Worthy are You to take the
book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with
Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
ii. This is the song of redemption and peace and love
VI. Conclusion
a. We sing a song, “Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power, are you washed in the blood of the lamb?” The question is for you today.
b. Invitation
