Cassiobury Park is said to be haunted by the ghost of Lord Capel. During the Civil War Lord Capel was a staunch Royalist who fought bravely for Charles I eventually surrendering to General Fairfax. He was beheaded in 1649, the same year that Charles met his end and legend has it that his heart was taken to the family home at Hadam Hall then later moved to Cassiobury Park where its location has been lost over the centuries. Now the headless spirit of Lord Capel can be seen in the park on a moonlit night especially around 9th March. Many people have seen his headless ghost though some have seen him with a head topped with long hair and sporting a moustache. |
