HERTFORDSHIRE
ye olde fighting cocks
2001 a member of the bar staff at Ye Old Fighting Cocks was cleaning the bar when he saw several figures emerge from the cellar. The figures were dressed in brown monks? habits and only appeared to exist from the knees upwards. They walked across the bar and sat down at the fireside table where they remained for several minutes before fading away. Another member of staff also saw a ghost in the building and was found shivering with fear but he would not expand on what he had seen. At one time a set of keys had been left on the bar whilst the manager went into the cellar. When he returned the keys had disappeared only to be discovered hanging on a key hook swinging violently, at the time the manager was the only one in the building.
The Fighting Cocks is a strange, octagon, shaped building which claims to be the oldest inhabited public house in England. The cellar is built on the eighth century gatehouse to the abbey and utili
sed tiles which were taken from the ruined Roman city of Verulamium
