Graduating
Class of 2003
Hi, my name is
Gabe Cap and I would love to attend
I plan to study engineering in college with a minor in chemistry.
I hope while I am studying hard during the school year I can intern
during the summer at an engineering company in
I have enjoyed being active in many sports in my fourteen years at Grace. Coaches have given me several coach’s awards for my faithfulness to be at every practice and play as hard as I can in every game. If I were asked for my strengths, one of them would be faithfulness. I have never quit a sport or activity because it was too difficult or because I was not the best athlete; and I will not quit in college. Over my high school years, I have played soccer, basketball, baseball, as well as being involved in volleyball and table tennis during ORUEF competitions. I love sports and they have taught me many other qualities such as sportsmanship and teamwork. In addition to the coach’s awards that I was awarded in basketball and soccer, I have received the most improved player award, and all-state award for soccer; two most valuable players award for junior varsity basketball; and the most valuable player for varsity baseball.
While competing at ORUEF, I was the setter on a volleyball team that placed first in 2000 and second place in 2001 and 2002. I have placed 3rd and 4th in table tennis. My love for sports has grown during my years at Grace and I plan to play intramural sports in college at ORU.
During junior high and high school, I was a member of the Boy Scouts of America. I enjoyed all aspects of this program from camping to sailing to learning new skills and serving others. The Boy Scouts have taught me many great skills for a life of helping others and serving the community. While I was a scout, I earned the highest rank for scouting the Eagle Scout Award. Becoming an Eagle Scout took a lot of time and hard work, but it proved to me that I had the perseverance and determination to finish.
Academics was another area where I tried to do my best during high school. During my junior and senior year, I was a member and team captain of the academic bowl team for the school. I enjoyed competing with my teammates in various competitions and state tournaments. This year the GFCS academic bowl team placed first in our district, region, and area for class 1A and advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 1998. I can tell that Academic Bowl has even helped me in memorization and recall in my studies and schoolwork. After the season, I was named Academic Honorable Mention All State for 2003. I know these Academic Bowl skills will be helpful to me as I continue my education in college.
I have many hobbies that I enjoy when I am not in school. I love watching sports especially football and basketball on television. I also enjoy playing chess and I have competed for chess at ORUEF the last three years. In addition, I like making web pages on the Internet. I have made several websites for business, personal information, and helped set up my dad’s website for school and the ECC basketball league he runs. For these sites, I like to create web graphics and designs using the skills I have learned from my computer graphics classes at GFCS. I also enjoy hanging out with friends and going to The Edge youth group and all their activities.
Academics was an area that I really focused on during high school. I have studied and worked very hard to make good grades in all of my classes and learn as much as I can to be ready for college. I have maintained an un-weighted 4.0 average and was on the honor roll all four years. I have taken every honors English and history course as well as advanced math, science, and Spanish courses. These courses have been very difficult and required hours of studying, but I know they have prepared me very well for my major in college. I have been awarded a GFCS academic achievement medallion for every major subject I have taken since my freshman year. I have also been named valedictorian for the class of 2003. I am very glad I have taken difficult classes, studied hard, learned great study skills, mastered various test taking strategies, and achieved the highest grades so that I can be prepared to succeed at ORU.
I have also been active in many areas of service for the school, church, and community. During the Boy Scouts, I was involved in community service activities almost every month; and for my Eagle Scout project, I built the sound booth for Grace’s youth group The Edge. This project alone took over 150 man-hours to complete. During my 10th grade year, I was nominated for the National Honor Society and have done many group service projects as well as totaling over fifty hours of community service each year during my membership. This year I have been the treasurer for the NHS. These groups have taught me to serve others before myself and to realize just how fortunate I am and how much God has blessed me with in my life. I have always been very involved in Student Council. I enjoy setting up activities and helping with homecoming to make everything run as smooth and as easily as possible. I have been elected class representative, executive body treasurer, and this year I am president of the senior class. I have gained many leadership and service skills that I will be able to use at college and in the workforce for many years to come.
I have worked hard all through junior high and high school to prepare myself for college and the job force in the future. I know an ORU college education will prepare me for the calling God has for me in the future to help me achieve my goals. I hope you will consider me for the ORU scholarship so that I can fulfill my dreams and callings.
Sincerely,
Gabe Cap
