JESUS THE BREAD OF LIFE (JOHN 6:25-59)

After the feeding of the 'five thousand', the people's expectation of Jesus was very high. For one to be able to perform such a great miracle must have power from on high. They recalled what the scriptures had written about Moses. God, through the powerful prayer of Moses, gave the Israelites manna while they were still dwelling in barren desert. So they searched for Him and followed Him, hoping to see more miracles and wonders.

"Do not work for food that spoil but work for food that last for eternal life"

Jesus wanted to enlighten them about the vice of centering their lives on temporary perishable world and its treasures. They must not focus too much attention on 'food that spoil' but on 'food that last for eternal life'.

This is not ordinary food but Jesus Christ Himself. Having Jesus living inside of us is eternal life. Jesus conquered and was raised from the dead; therefore having Jesus living and fully united with our human nature and spirit is eternal life. For the soul to be without God is dead. The soul that dwells apart from its creator is in darkness but the soul that is fed, cared for and nurtured by God's love is shining and alive in this world and the next.

'Mark of approval'

Jesus is the Anointed One, the Messiah sent by God. He is the true Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.

During the time of the Old Testament as commanded by Moses; a lamb unblemished must be slaughtered, its blood smeared on the door posts, its meat completely eaten and the bones must be unbroken.

Jesus is what was to come. In the past the Israelites continued to celebrate the Passover meal until the true Lamb of God was slaughtered, then all rituals, which were only symbols, were supposed to go.

The Blood of Jesus washes away the sin from our hearts thus unveiled us from the glory of God. The Blood of the 'Lamb of God', who died so those souls can be saved, was symbolized by blood on the doorposts, which was the entrance, liken to our hearts. With the sight of this blood, the angels, anointed to take away lives, by-passed the occupants of those houses.

No bone of Jesus is to be broken just as no bone of the lamb was to be broken. They were to eat the Paschal lamb hastily, ready to go any moment. None of the meat must be wasted. This showed the preciousness of the Lamb of God. Just like the feeding of the five thousand, whereby all leftovers must be collected. So too is the Body of Christ, reverence must be shown to the Bread and Wine that has been transformed.

"I am the bread of life", "He who comes to me will never be hungry, he who believes in me will never be thirsty." What did Jesus mean by saying that?

Jesus was talking about our spiritual life. Because our limited minds cannot understand the mystery of the Spirit; therefore Jesus had to explain the need of the souls, to those of our physical bodily need. Our physical bodies would be starved to death, without basic and essential necessities of life, that is food and water, or bread and wine. Surely those who received Holy Communion still feel hungry, but their souls and spirits are fed. Spiritual nourishment superseded physical nourishment. Jesus would have been completely starve to death, when He fasted forty days and nights without basic necessity of food and drink. He not only survived, but also conquered the desire to consume the forbidden fruits, of which Adam and Eve could not resist. From here, we need to ponder on the mystery of fasting and its fruits. Fasting is punishing the sinful human nature, for hurting the almighty and ever-loving God. Fasting would bring about great blessing and joy, when our pure human nature and spirit, unites those of the same of Jesus. In unity and Oneness, we indulge ourselves in pleasing God, in Jesus Christ.

Christ said to His disciples, "I have come to do the will of the One who sent me."

It is this same Jesus that is in the Holy Eucharist. Therefore those who receive Holy Communion which is Jesus' Body must also do the work of Christ. The work of Christ is to do the will of God. Jesus returned to His Father, in unity with His glorified human body and spirit; both sent forth the Holy Spirit to His Disciples, who were anointed to become Apostles They would have Jesus' unaccomplished mission at heart. The Spirit of glorified human Jesus, together with His completely pure human will, enters into our lives, as we consume Jesus human body. His human body and spirit, never failed to glorify and please the Father. Therefore when He enters into our lives and made His home there, we too would work towards the will of Jesus.

Jesus is One with the Father, or God, so are those who welcome Jesus into the core of their lives, would be able to be one with the Father, through the way of Jesus Christ.

The Father and the Son, is God the Spirit. For the Father and the Son of God, is not a human being, but God. Only Jesus Christ as Man, was a human being, who had completed and perfected God's plan of salvation, thus rewarded to seat at the 'Right Hand' of God. Right hand means having the authority and power of God. Therefore, Jesus as a human being was glorified to become God.

Jesus Christ as glorified human being, after His glorification comes to us as God and is related to us, in His human nature and being. With this similarity, we would not fear to approach the magnificent throne of the almighty God. For through the blood of Jesus Christ, we were made righteous and worthy for the Kingdom of God. This we owe to the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. Therefore the mystery of the body and blood of Jesus Christ is to reconcile us, through Himself, who is the representative of the whole human race, with God.

The drink here does not mean ordinary water but drink for the thirsty soul. What drink does our souls need? The soul needs the Holy Spirit and the Life of God to care and nourish it. These are basic and essential needs of the souls, of which we, in our human nature, had no right to deny these to them. We owe them these basic needs. If we purposely deny the most essential needs of the souls, we had done the greatest injustice to our lives, which we need to answer Jesus at Judgement Day.

The Holy Spirit is the only drink that can truly quench our souls. Liken to a river that had long been blockaded, finally opened up. What joy, the dehydrated area would be, when finally filled with flowing water. Similarly it is liken to a desert land that had cracked because of dryness, but what great joy the land would felt, when rain finally come.

The joy of the souls is inexpressible, when the Holy Spirit, enters and renew our lives, bringing about a rebirth, in the Spirit.

Jesus is the One whom we consume. With Jesus in us, our souls and spirits, in unity shall do the work and continue the mission of Christ.

The people wanted to ensure Jesus' power was indeed from God. They then asked for more miracles, but Jesus refused their requests knowing it would not bear fruit, as they could not accept Jesus' humility and mission. All they wanted was to see power, authority meant to redeem selfish pride and revenge. They wanted Jesus to be their King. The King of the Jews who shall be very powerful, like King David. They wanted to take back from the Romans what they lost. They were colonized by the powerful Roman Empire. The Roman armies were committed, highly effective and well trained, of which ordinary king and armies could never challenge.

They could not accept Jesus as mere spiritual king. They wanted immediate results and the Romans defeated. They wanted to know more of Jesus' power in order to make Him their King anointed by God.

Jesus did not want to waste His time entertaining their whims and fancies. Only those whom the Father had given to Him shall be saved and understood the mysteries. These included the future twelve Apostles, holy women, a handful of Jews and the Gentiles.

'This man is Jesus son of Joseph, isn't he?'

The people familiar with Jesus' family knew Mary and Joseph well. They knew they were an ordinary poor couple. They also knew Jesus as a child in the village, with little education, living in poverty and humility. To say He was the One whom God sent as food for eternal life was a great sin and blasphemy. They wanted to get rid of Him, as He was mad, dangerous and spoke nonsense.

'No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him to me; and I will raise him to life on the last day'

As in Jesus' time, till today; evangelization in the world depended on God's reconciling Spirit, in Jesus Christ, as God.

Jesus was an ordinary human being, in His human nature, of which we can relate to Him, as our brother and Son of Man. He had perfect human figure and characters, together with a soul, human spirit and will.

Merging with His human soul, spirit and will, is the Divine Spirit and Will. With these two natures working in perfect harmony and co-operation, Jesus was therefore capable of conquering all.

Therefore with this divine truth, Man could only be victorious, if Jesus essence of human and divine nature dwell, conquer and overpower those of our sinful natures, which we inherited from our sinful ancestors, yet we happily sustain them, by providing them vast opportunity for growth.

Jesus' glorified human spirit, united in complete oneness, enters and penetrates, through God's station in us; that is through the pure human nature and spirit. The pace of deliverance and healing of our human spirits and natures depend so much on our faith and submission to God.

'Everyone will be taught by God.' 'Anyone who hears the Father and learns from him comes to me.'

God is the only Father, Lord and God who is the source of every lives, whether those seen and unseen. He holds the whole creation, on the palm of His 'Hand'. Nothing can ever escape from His view and intervention, but He chose to concentrate on the salvation of Man, by His Incarnation into human Jesus, thus God dwells among us, yet they could not recognized Him. God is still presence, after the ascension of Jesus, glorified body, soul and spirit, into heaven, by the powerful working of His Spirit. God consecrates human beings us His channels and Instruments to do His works of salvation and redemption, simultaneous providence of our human necessities.

The mysteries of conversion Man could not grasp, but the reality had taken place: in the past, now and the future, until the end of time. It was the mystery of God's drawing power at work, of which our naked eye would be amazed. This was because of the presence of the souls, inside human beings. These souls, since the creation of Adam and Eve, were the 'breathe' of God, or the life of God, in time, space and the created world. God focused, focuses and will, till Jesus' Second Coming, on this most precious life of His. In this world where Light and Darkness, likened to wheat and weed in the field of God, had to grow together, until 'harvest time'. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, the youngest son, was at fault for abandoning, his home, in search of another home, in a strange and deserted land. The father filled with sadness, yet not despair, but hopeful, that this son of his would return one day. His son's suffering was simultaneously bore by his father too.

Mankind in this world filled their lives with different spirits of this world, of which brought so much satisfaction and joy to our human nature, but not the souls. When our hearts are filled with what does not come from God; it became too congested for God's Spirit to enter. This would surely bring about inner spiritual warfare, between the pure human nature and spirit. Both struggle for recognition and attention. The sinful nature struggle for attention and recognition from the world and its wisdom, but the pure human nature, for God and His affection.

During time of sickness, hormone changes and suffering, the inner battles could cause greater suffering or joy.

If we put the triumph of the sinful nature above those of our souls and spirits, sickness, hormone changes in adolescents and ordinary suffering aggravate further pain and confusion.

In contrary it would bring about serenity, hope and acceptance.

Those who have Jesus dwelling in them and empowering them will have eternal life. For Jesus was the source of eternal life, which was lost because of the sins of Adam and Eve, but restored by Christ. When we receive the Eucharist as our spiritual food and drink, we draw strength and power from Him to do the work that God commands us to do.

Jesus is fully aware of God's will, so would those who has Christ enthroned and at 'home' in their lives, too will know the will of God.

"This, then, is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread that your ancestors ate, but then died. The one who eats this bread will live forever."

Their ancestors ate the manna but later died. Yes! But if they had worshipped and obeyed the One who gave them the manna they would also be saved. Yet, before Christ Jesus' death there was no salvation. All those who were destined to belong to God would be drawn to Jesus, even though they had long gone from the earth. For their human spirits and souls, still existed, not fully in God's presence, because of sin, but they eagerly waited for God's Incarnation into Man. They awaited the 'hour of glory' or Jesus' human body to be offered, so to redeem the sins of mankind. When Jesus died, all waited with great joy, peace and hope, joining together, in their spirits and souls, as they awaited God's greatest Gift to Man; that is the restoration of human being to immortality. At the dawning of the third day, God was impatient to reward His beloved Son, who was a human being to be One in the Divine Godhead. Finally the 'hour' that they waited for arrived and shout of victory was heard, everywhere in the 'world of the living'. This is the reward that God is giving to each one of us. The precious unmerited Gift of eternal life and finally the immortality of our bodies, in heaven. The journey of conversion takes a lifetime, which begins, once we arrive into this mortal and perishable world, which was the consequence of sin. As little infants, prayers of their parents, all the saints in heaven and earth, go hand in hand with the prayer of Jesus, to protect, guide and shield these souls that had just arrived into time and space. As the infants grew older, they are capable of hurting God; personal conversion towards God, is therefore necessary for salvation.

Only a handful understood the meaning of God's love and Providence. If they had accepted God as their Father, they would be saved. They were ungrateful people, who treasured the manna, which were obviously food from 'Yahweh God who loved them', but by their purposeful spiritual blindness; most of them died a spiritual death as well.

They were indeed very proud of God who loved them, but through this pride, they had lost the essence of God's purpose for them. God through His journeys, with holy men and women of the past, tried to reveal to His people that indeed, He was their Father and His people 'Children of God'.

The Chosen people of God were convinced that God was almighty and powerful, but they cannot relate themselves to God. God was a stranger, whom they worshipped in trembling fear at as far as the foot of Mount Sinai. They dared not approach nearer than that or else their sins and faithlessness, would bring about great condemnation. In their disparity, concerning the disposition of their spirits with that of God, their physical would encountered great spiritual shock.

Therefore God had a greater plan, so that He could be accepted into the lives of the fallen human race, which He promised to rescue.

He had to be incarnated into a human body, of which Mary, a young, chaste and pure lady would be chosen to mother the human life of God Incarnate, that is Jesus Christ.

This Child journeyed through life, experiencing the consequence of sin, although He did not deserve. He continued to resist temptations all His Life on earth. The Devil focused on this mysterious child, whom was the Hope of the world. The forces of darkness tried to topple His plan of salvation for man. Fighting against all adversaries, of whom the first Adam succumbed, He won victory for man, as tormenting death did not stop Him from fulfilling God's will for Him.

By the mystery of His death, which was part and parcel of the consequence of sin, He took His place as representative of Man and made His final plunge on behalf of all fallen creatures of His.

Through baptism, we join Jesus in His final plunge and died to sin and its enslavement. From that day forth, we are to live a resurrected life, as depicted by Christ resurrection from the death.

After His resurrection, ascension, He was united with His Father, and He is made presence in the world after that, through the presence of His Spirit. His Spirit is God, who cannot be separated, distinguished or differentiated from either the Father or the Son. Both share the same spirit, but for the sake of Man's limited understanding, we named Him Son of God, which is His Divine personality and Son of Man, which was His human personality. The Spirit that is in the Son, is also the Spirit of the Father. For the sake of Man's understanding; God the Son dwelled in Jesus, whereas God the Father is in heaven. Even though Jesus was on earth, as a human being, but His Divine Nature as Son of God, or God is everywhere, empowering the whole universe and the Kingdom of God.

Jesus as glorified human being, returned to heaven to reign with God. He promised to be with them always. This promise was fulfilled, through the out-pouring of His Spirit, initially on the First Apostles, then to all those who are chosen. Christians are supposed to be chosen people of God, made worthy by Christ to receive the Holy Spirit.

Through the institution of the Church of which Christ's presence is made real, in various Sacraments, passed and given to us by Christ. All those Sacraments were channels of which God feeds His Sheep, with the pastures and living water of heaven.

Christ promised His church, His body and blood, of which was made presence to us through the celebration of the Holy Mass.

In order that the Mass holds meaning for us; we need to be presence in the celebration with a humble and contrite hearts. With knowledge that ransom for our sins, Christ paid for us; therefore our veils supposed to be removed, thus enable us to surge up to God. But we need God's love and mercy to bring us into His Kingdom. 'Thy Kingdom Come!' were our pleads, which came into reality, during the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God after that empowered all the territories once claimed by Satan. With Christ's victory over sin and death, Gods reclaimed what belongs to Him.

After consuming the human body and human blood of Christ; the victorious human spirit of Christ, is supposed to dwell in us. His powerful human spirit would join our weakening human spirit, like a cripple being offered a pair of clutches, thus enabled him to walk again. Christ shares our human yoke and suffering, which were the consequences of our sins.

What more the presence of God's Spirit, in the human Jesus, which was made real and presence through the consecrated bread and wine; would filled us to the brim, if our impure and weakening human spirit gives way and submitted to God. Selfish pride drove away God's Spirit, in the lives of Adam, Eve and their descendents, so too this would apply us. Liken to a young child being trained by his instructor, to fit himself in the water. Human beings born into this world, soon get themselves adopted into the natural environment. We walk on the surface of the earth. Gravity pull prevented us from floating away into the air. But in water, the gravity pull was less, and human can easily float, without even a struggle to get afloat. I once watched a young child, who was eager to swim well like his father or instructor. He was easy to teach, because he was willing to submit to another law, of the water. Then the Lord spoke to me, "This was how some can easily get acquainted in the Kingdom of heaven, whereas most had to struggles in futility". The reason for those that struggles, needlessly was because they were too proud, thus refused to be humble and submit to God. We cannot apply human laws, to those of the Spirit. Just like the young child, who acquired another assets by being able to swim in water, by accepting, yielding and trusting another law, that governed the water. We as Christians, need to live as Jesus Christ had, as a human being. He trusted and yielded to God, without any hint of doubt, thus able to conquer, what no man could, that is death. Therefore He won the victory for us. We therefore need to yield and trust in another law of God, that is the Spirit, so that we can surge into the Kingdom of God, like an eagle that soar in height of the sky.

God was present in God Incarnate, which was human Jesus, while He was in this world. Yet as God, He was everywhere. We who consume the Body and drink the Blood of Christ take Jesus into our lives and hearts, so that we could live renewed lives. Simultaneously, God is everywhere; so too God comes to us in various mysterious ways, bringing Gifts, Blessing and Reconciliation.

Praise the Lord. Amen.
