Wedding in Cana (John 2:1-12)

Jesus' mother said to Him, 'They are out of wine.'

Jesus replied, "You must not tell me what to do", "My time has not yet come."

Jesus' mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever He tells you'.

Jesus said to the servant, "Fill these jars with water."

"Now draw some water out and take it to the man in charge of the feast."

The man in charge was amazed and said, 'Everyone else serves the best wine first and after the guests have drunk a lot; he serves the ordinary wine.'

'But you have kept the best wine until now!'

Purpose of the miracle:

The Almighty and compassionate God revealed His glory through His Son, with the participation of Mary.

Let us emphasize on few crucial elements, concerning the whole scenario.

Firstly, related to the wedding feast, both in physical reality and spirituality.

Secondly, concerning the participation of Mary.

Thirdly, stresses the transformation of ordinary water, into wine, bore both human real event and the spiritual transformation of our lives, from being aligned to the descendents of the fallen Adam, into being the descendents of the New and victorious Adam, Jesus Christ.

The wedding feast of the Son of God, had already began after the death, resurrection, ascension and the Holy Spirit, reinstated God's reign over the whole creation, that had been tarnished, because of sin.

Through, with and in unity with the Holy Spirit, the Father draws Man, who were the spiritual 'Bride' of Christ, to His Son, as a glorified human being.

Firstly the Jews, who were the invited guests, found themselves unworthy, because they could not humbled themselves to be servants of one another, just like Christ was. To be true disciples of Jesus, demand submission of our human will to the will of God. By this each has to submit to one another in the mystery of divine love. Divine love is God's love, which Man had demeaned into different version of human love. Human love is an imperfect love, after sin came into the world and lives of human being. Man could not fully participated in sharing and administering it to others; rather they found themselves swelled with selfish love and lust.

Just like the Jews, being too proud to attend the wedding feast of Jesus, so were many gentiles.

No one can get to the Father, besides entering God's Kingdom through Jesus Christ, His Son, by the working of the Holy Spirit.

What roles, Mary played in God's plan of salvation?

Did Mary wrestle with Jesus, so to claim motherly power and authority over Him, because He was her son?

Did she demand for this miracle to happen, without weighing the consequences?

The miracle revealed to the world, that Mary had not bow down to the words of Jesus, instead acted contrary to what He said.

Did Mary demand honor and respect from her son?

Why did Jesus say, that His hour had not come?

Indeed, this event happened after His baptism, of which He was anointed by the Holy Spirit, to fulfill the mission of the salvation of the whole world.

Wonders and miracles were some of the ways, in which He had to manifest, so to reveal, the Godhead, within Him. Otherwise His words although powerful would be meaningless.

In fact, He need not succumb to the will of any man, not even His mother, yet He would not disappoint her.

This was the first and crucial miracle, revealing the humility of Jesus, although God yet in event of urgency would not failed to satisfy mere human need.

It simultaneously revealed to Man, the mystery and necessity of being transformed personally, into wine, or spiritual inclined being, so to please the Almighty and eternal God.

Jesus transformed ordinary drinking water into not merely consumable wine, but the best wine ever served to guests.

If we only follow the directive of our Blessed Mother Mary, then we would be likened to ordinary water, whereby Jesus would change into best wine. That is to say, God, through Jesus would not disappoint Men, who were inclined to follow Christ Jesus. God through His Son, in the working of the Holy Spirit, would not do partial transformation in our lives, but He would make us into perfect human being like Mary or Jesus.

His workmanship in building the Temple, that is our body is not inferior; instead, He put all His heart, soul and mind into building up our lives, whereby His Son Jesus' life would not be spared. How awesome and ultra generous was and is our God.

Mary worked as God's 'handmaid', in co-operating with God, through her Son, in building up the Kingdom of God, in our hearts and lives.

We too must not hesitate, when being called to participate, but responded with an open heart and mind to the will of God. When we are being called to work in the vineyard of the Lord, most of us were cold in our response. Most said 'yes', yet were never present in the workplace, whereas there are many who refused; yet labored with Jesus and Mary, in God's vineyard.

In reality, she would not direct Jesus, as human parents would toward their children. But she knew the priority and she need not beg, nor plea, but knew the heart and character of human Jesus inside out.

Her human will is the same as Jesus', both overpowered by God. Many of the recorded childhood event in Jesus' life never failed to amaze her, leaving her pondering on who her son was. Inside and in unity with His humanity and flesh, was the Divine Godhead, of which Mary had to learn and discover.

Human Jesus and Mary shared the same mission.

Jesus suffered; but Mary experienced no less.

Jesus died; Mary's heart was crushed.

His own people rejected Jesus; Mary experienced no less.

Jesus was glorified, so was the human body of Mary.

Jesus was perfect and love, so was Mary.

This miracle revealed to us of Jesus' honor, showered on His mother, and the participation of Mary, who directs us all to follow the directive of Jesus.

Jesus directed the servants to fill the jars with water. We are called to be baptized by dipping our bodies into the water, and are to be transformed by Jesus. The Holy Spirit that once descended on Jesus head would also descend on us, so to renew our lives.

The presence of the awesome power of God's Spirit, so to push Him, to fulfill God's mission, would also be upon us.

'They are out of wine'

Let these words of Mary, be an expression of sacramental, which reflect the spirit.

Mary is telling Jesus, 'Please the world and all the charism that thou had shower so generous to mankind are being wasted. They preferred to exploit their gifts and talents, so to gain worldly power, recognition, admiration and domination. The world is out of 'wine'. The people of this world emphasize too much on what is physically tangible, rather than what is spiritually of the same, which superseded the physical. They do not hunger for the Spirit of God, or its precious gifts. They refused to walk the road into the Kingdom of God, but stand near the 'door' and watch. They had lost their faith in You, Almighty God'.

"You must not tell me what to do!"

Jesus said to Mary, "I know what the world really need. You do not need to tell me what to do. I know My Father's will. He is very compassionate and patient. I am waiting on Him to take the next crucial step. Mother! You just need to be very patient. I know how you feel and what you experience is also what I experience. Do you think I love to see the world and my people's direction, go haywire? I know what is right for them, Mother! Do not worry!"

"My time has not yet come."

Jesus again reminded His beloved mother, "The time for God's intervention, so to chastise the whole world had not come yet, but when the situation go out of hand, and the 'little ones' cried out to me, I will not hesitate to help.

Jesus' mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever He tells you'.

Mary said to the whole world and children God had entrusted to her, "Beloved children, listen to my Son! Do whatever He tells you to do and you will not perish. I will always stay by your side and pray for you, my children. My heart is broken to see so many souls being drag by their bodily desires into hell. I see so many souls, unable to hasten their stays in purgatory, so to surge into the fullness of God's Kingdom. There are so many that stay on unnecessary, because they refused to be enlighten, of the pathway into heaven. I sent messages after messages, but how many really ponder deeply into every word that had been revealed. The world is blind, but they refused spiritual sight. How foolish, like a blind man so used to darkness, that they refused light! Mary asked us all the children that Jesus had entrusted to her, to listen to Jesus her Son and God. Follow His commandments of love and self-denial. Follow His footsteps and receive His Spirit, in unity with the Spirit of God the Father."

Mary knew very well the heart and desire of Jesus, for her children. Her children are God's Children and brothers and sisters of human Jesus.

We must not be complacent in holding firmly to Mary, although she would never tear us away from her; but she is the instrument of God, to bring more and more souls to God. The Catholic Church, with full conviction emphasize of her motherly care and provident, whereas other denominations do not. It does not matter whether they show any devotion, or made her their intercessors, but Mary stood close watch over all God's chosen people.

It is an honor and great privilege to have a mother, that exceed the physical realm; showering us with her gentle motherly care and provident. Acknowledging her; is in fact a gain for us, rather than a deficit. For Jesus Christ, at the cross, entrusted and gave Mary to St. John as his mother, when His earthly responsibility had exhausted. When He entrusted His beloved mother to St. John, He too does the same to us.

In my personal experience of walking with Jesus in the Spirit, I felt a great joy and honor indeed to have a heavenly mother, who is so pure and holy. She is our role model of which all Christian must look up to.

Jesus said to the servant, "Fill these jars with water."

Jesus is telling the world, before a transformation is possible, you must all be baptized. Your human spirit, heart, desire, will and mind must be responsive to the transformation. Nothing is impossible, if there are 'water in the jar'. The sacramental must reflect the spirit. Whatever gestures and words, must be of the same in the heart. That is to say; if we wants to go into the baptismal pool, we must have a desire and will to be renew, reborn and be transformed, otherwise rituals and words, remain just thus, bearing no spiritual significant.

"Now draw some water out and take it to the man in charge of the feast."

Jesus said, "Look and see! How those who are filled and empowered with the Holy Spirit, manifest His presence in, with and through their lives. Life in the Spirit, is a continuous change, until we are fully purified. If that had happened we would join in with the heavenly saints and experience true peace, love and joy. 'The people in this world look for these, but they could never find, because they rejected Me'.

In order to be God's instruments and servants; God personally or through His instruments; anoints them with the seal of true discipleship. These true disciples would never want to live apart from God and His mission. They would be patient and wait on God. They do not want any recognition from the world or fellow Christians. Their duty is to do God's will and give glory, praise and appreciation to God alone.

Before Jesus left this world, He appointed Peter to be the head of the church, replacing Him. Peter is the holder of the heavenly key. He had the right to let whomever he chooses to enter and to reject whomever he chooses. What does all this mean?

Did Peter become God or Jesus?

No he did not, but Jesus returned to the Father, had left a physical vacuum and leadership among the community of believers. Peter and his successors, whom the Holy Spirit anoints to stand in Jesus' place, replaced Jesus physical presence. All the words that He officially said and works that he performed under inspiration and anointation are supposed to be read with solemnity and discernment, by the church, especially its leaders.

They are the 'man in charge of the feast'. Members of the church, who had been personally anointed with the Holy Spirit, need to come forward to the leaders of the church and present themselves as servants of one another. All selfish pride and egoism must be cast aside, so to bring glory to God alone. No one had the right to glorify himself or herself; for none in this world had been counted as worthy, but Christ's love mercy and compassion had made us worthy for God.

The man in charge amazed and said, 'Everyone else serves the best wine first and after the guests have drunk a lot; he serves the ordinary wine.'

When those who were anointed by the Holy Spirit, for God's mission were presented to the 'Man in charge of the feast', they were amazed at how God worked wonders and miracles, even they themselves might find it hard to ponder.

God, who is mighty, powerful yet merciful, can do everything, according to His will and desire, so that the proud would be humbled and the lowly uplifted as equal. Children of God's Kingdom must not live in condemnation but be truly free, because Jesus had set us free from the supposed to be eternal bondage of sin.

The first shall be the last; the last becomes the first. The great would be humbled and lowly uplifted.

The best wine was supposed to be served first, then ordinary wine and water comes last. But the water, supposed to be the least desired, would be transformed into the best wine ever serve. God looked at the whole church as His body. The church consisted of multitudes of members. God does not look merely from the outward actions, gestures or words, but He is emphasizing on the hearts. Therefore, the leaders of the church and ordinary members are at par with each other, as far as God is concerned. The leaders had greater responsibility, at the service of ordinary members. Whereas ordinary members are supposed to be at the service of each other and their leaders, for the wellbeing of the whole community. They are supposed to be obedience to the teaching of Christ, passed down by the power of the Holy Spirit, through leaders of the church. Individual Christians are given Gift of wisdom and discernment by the Holy Spirit. It is up to them to exploit those precious gifts. We cannot blame God, if we do not experience the presence of those gifts. For these Gifts needed to be accompany by Faith. Faith is an unmerited gift of God to those who desire to follow the footsteps of Christ. Faith too needed to be exercised. We need to be submissive and open up our hearts to God, so that His Spirit might have the opportunity to teach and transformed our ignorant and deceived conscience. Faith is so fragile, but even as small as mustard seed, would work wonder. When Jesus walked on the water towards Peter, his faith increased as he saw Jesus' supernatural power, but collapsed when the physical law and reality engulfed him.

By these gifts, they were able to have spiritual insight on what is truth and falsehood. Wisdom of God, gifted to them enables them to assimilate and later gift of courage, enable their convictions to be spread boldly. God showers Man with unlimited gifts of the Holy Spirit and our hearts are like soil, for the seeds of the Holy Spirit to grow and later bear fruits or else wasted.

God focuses on individual hearts. Surprisingly ordinary members of the church might turned out to be the 'best wine', ever served, so are those leaders of the community, who had hearts that are humbled and simple.

Jesus came for the lowly and the outcast people; those that the world despised, He took them as His very own.

Leaders of the community must not overlooked and despised the simplicity and academically theological ignorant, church's members, otherwise they would be humbled, so that they too could be made into members of God's Kingdom.

We must learn our lessons well, from past experiences, whereby the leaders of the Jewish community, were greatly condemned and rejected by Jesus, for their spiritual blindness, yet too stubborn and foolish not to change.

God desires that all leaders and members of the community of believers be chosen as members of His eternal Kingdom.

The law of God and those of Man, contradict each other. The law of the spirit is eternal and applied in both the physical and spiritual realm. If while still clothed in our physical bodies, we desire for the spiritual, then the Kingdom of God had come into our lives, on earth.

The law made by man is only good and just for this life on earth only.

'But you have kept the best wine until now!'

Yes! We might be amazed, when Jesus comes again to judge those who are still alive in this world and those who are in purgatory; how many souls are still very much in 'love with Jesus'.

How they are willing to die a martyr's death! How they are willing to sacrifice all they had for God. How unquenchable their souls and spirits are, except when God's Spirit feeds their souls!

This is the 'best wine that is being kept', until the end of time.

Praise, glory and thanks, be to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
