WHO IS THE GREATEST (MATT 18:1-5)

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, asking, 'Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?'

The disciples followed Jesus with a clear motives of seeking for material and worldly favor, by the words that they daringly utter.

They thought that Jesus would soon become a powerful Jewish King and hero. Before all this would happen, they intend to secretly ask Jesus for His personal opinion, on who were in fact Jesus' favorites, among them.

Most of them would fancy, receiving honorable and high positions, if Jesus was installed as their King.

They would be powerful and receive respect from, even the Jewish authorities.

Jesus could not penetrate the mind of even His disciples, not even Peter, of His mission on earth. They were too blinded, by the material and power of this world, that their hearts and minds were choke to the will of God for them.

So Jesus called a child, had him stand in front of them, and said, "I assure you that unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of heaven.

Nicodemus, once asked Jesus, how can a person enters the Kingdom of heaven?

He was surprised to receive the most unachievable answer, and asked, 'How can a person, returns to his mother's womb, and be born again?' (John 3:1-3)

This would be the question, most of us shared with Nicodemus and other disciples of Jesus.

Yet, even today as the theory, had been revealed, yet many people still grope in darkness, not knowing the real pathway, into the Kingdom of God. There are basically two pathways to sainthood, at the service of God. All Children of God, need to serve, so to be in partnership, with Jesus, to save ourselves and others too.

There are those saints still under modification on earth, serve in a silent ways, others were called to be the conspicuous 'voice and act' of God in this world. All were suppose to be personally molded into sainthood, in the role that we are called.

Jesus said that unless, we are like little children, we cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.

What is so unique about the personality of a child?

First and foremost, a child learned through experience, to be humble and relied on their parents to provide for him.

Children would cling to their parents and reject strangers. They would be very open and trusted their parents, on the most innermost secrets of their lives.

In return earthly sinful parents had tainted the purity of children by misappropriating children trust towards them.

They were being trained to serve the world, rather then to be prepared for the Kingdom of heaven.

All worldly astuteness in children was highly praised, instead of spiritual astuteness and wisdom.

Children's intelligent was based on the IQ test set, by the wise people of this world, according to the world's standard, instead of God's.

Children who had, above average worldly intelligence were highly praised and emphasized, rather then Children who were truly wise, in the eyes of God. Man looked up to this world wisdom as though they would base their lives and value upon them.

Who were they?

God created Man and give them wisdom, knowledge and understanding of God's will for them and others, but Man, since the fall of Adam and Eve, had rejected that values and virtues, entrusted to them. They create their own values and made them models, for the whole world to follow. Like personalities, whom we held high opinion of. We may start the search, in their lives for a secret recipes to their success. We began to imitate their lifestyles and work toward, achieving what our models had achieved.

We trained our children these ways to be slave of the world, rather then to God who created us, and all that are good and wholesome.

There still existed parents who comply to the pure quality of parenthood, yet not to its perfection.

We all need to train our children to seek God first above all other material wealth of this world. We need to train them to trust and rely on God to provide for them. With knowledge of God as our Divine Providence, we would be able to work hard towards achieving the roles that God had entrusted to us. We are the 'hands, feet, mouth and presence of God', in this material world, if we were consecrated for His purpose.

The greatest in the Kingdom of heaven is the one who humbles himself and become like this child.

And whoever welcomes in my name one such child as this, welcome me.

It is contradictory to say being the greatest is to be like a child, helpless, clinging in love and trust to his parents dependant on their guidance and care in order to mature and conquer the world. Jesus is the only begotten Son of God. He is God came down from Heaven as a servant, the humblest of all servants of God. He was humiliated, tortured, doubted, criticized, condemned, blamed etc. He once said to the crowd after John's disciples left, that John is the greatest among many prophets, yet the least in the Kingdom of God is greatest. Jesus is the least in the Kingdom of God and He is the greatest.

The world and its values contradict Heaven and its values. The material contradicts the spiritual.

When Jesus said that 'those who welcome this little child in my name welcomes me'. It has a very great significance by saying 'in my name.'

Many people do charity, not in Christ's name but for their own glorification and namesake. When we welcome or accept the least of our brothers and sisters on earth as our partners and equal, we do the same to Jesus.

The greatest in the Kingdom of God is the least on earth. The richest in the Kingdom of God is the poor on earth who hungers for the Holy Spirit to feed them.

We ought to understand the term, 'humility' and what does it really mean!

Humility, is not timidity, rather clearly the opposite. Being timid according to a dictionary is being afraid, apprehensive, bashful, cowardly, coy, diffident, fainthearted, fearful, nervous, etc. The opposites of these are boldness and brave.

Jesus was bold and brave to face His adversaries with words and actions. He had these characters, which were heavenly virtues that led to His death. He walked the path of Truth and there were never any words that contradict His virtues.

Yet He was the source of humility. What does this mean?

He humbled Himself, towards the will of His Father, until death.

He learned through His trials and sufferings to be completely humble.

Humility was obviously lacking in our first parents, which led to their fall into sins. They instead were prideful and arrogant towards God, which led to their disobedience and therefore failed to trust in God fully.

We ought to understand, whom should we be obedient to?

If, we are employees, we need to be obedience and humble to our employers and those whom he designated as authority over us, like our managers or supervisors. Yet justice must be served, as this world is tainted with sins, which might led those having upper hands over us, to manipulated their responsibilities and abused those under them.

If we were children to our parents who loved and provided for us, we need to do the same, by returning them love, honor and respect, in all areas of our lives.

If we were, Christians and intend to live a life pleasing to God, who loves and provides for us; parents, loved ones, employers, etc, are His imperfect channels to provide us with what were rightfully ours, what must we do, in return for His gifts to Man?

Yet His greatest Gift, was not merely our parents, employers, loved ones and all worldly wealth, but His only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, whom He did not spare, in order to shower us with His love.

What then should be the most appropriately and rightfully duty to be given Him?

What is God, searching for in Man?

He was, is and will always search and look for the quality of obedience and humility in His creatures, which bored His Image and Likeness.

He looks for those who would raised up their hands to embraced His outstretched hands that was never tired of reaching to Man.

He looks for those mouths who would open, to His hand, when He comes to feed them.

He is looking for hearts, that would open to His flows of the Holy Spirit.

He is looking for minds, that God can use His 'love pen' to write upon, and not disappeared later.

He is looking for souls that would never stop fighting for justice for themselves, until fulfillment.

He is looking for constant and consistent love from His creatures on earth.

He is looking for plants that would not sway to the fierce, blow of the wind. He is going to nourish and care for that plant, until it bears fruit. He would prune and clear the tree, of any unwanted elements, so that it would bear more fruits. All these represent trials and suffering, of which even our hearts, souls and minds would be hard shaken and rocked, yet we would still be save, because Jesus is in our hearts, minds and our souls. He would be the master and lord of all our trials and sufferings. He had gone through all those, which taught Him to be totally obedient, so He and His Father would use this same theory to teach us to be obedience and humble enough to submit fully to God.

Praise the Lord. Amen.
