The Temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16)
The Temple of God is a house of God. His dwelling place, whereby, He is enthroned as the head, and it is a center whereby, He is worshipped and praised.
The body of ours is the Temple of the Holy Spirit. Each individual body is like a tiny brick for the Temple of God. Although, there are so many bodies, yet united in, with and through the Body of Christ, we are, but only one Body, called the Mystical Body of Christ. Each of us, filled with God's Spirit is like a tiny cell to Jesus' Glorified Body.
Jesus Christ, Himself is the 'Head' of this Mystical Body. He is the head of every tiny cell of this Mystical Body.
Jesus in Holy Communion or Spiritual Communion, comes to us, perfectly whole, not a fragment or only part of it, but the whole of Himself. The Body of Christ, that we receive is His Human Body, of the Son of Man, born of Mary. When we partake and eat of this Body, worthily through grace, our sinful human body would be slowly transform into the Human Body of Christ. This Human Body went through great trials and temptation. It suffered in great humiliation and agony. The Jewish people eat of the Paschal lamb, that was to be unblemished, spotless, young and as a whole specially selected as a foreshadow of Jesus, the real 'Lamb of God'. As the Paschal lamb is being slaughter and eaten with the right setting, was in fact pointing to Jesus Christ. When we eat of His Body, we too shall be transformed into His likeness, whereby the mystery of our physical transformation only God and His Spirit, knows about it.
There is, but only One 'Lamb of God', yet everyone is in fact eating the whole Body of Jesus Christ.
Therefore Christ dwells in each of us as a whole person. During the feeding of 'Five thousand', Jesus revealed to mere human, the mystery of the multiplication. To God everything is possible. As the five loaves of bread and two fishes multiplied by itself, until there were enough food for the five thousands, excluding women and children, yet twelve basketful were later collected from the leftover. This by itself is a sign of Jesus' Body that, would soon be broken up and shared among all who believed. All of us shall be fed to the fullness, yet there shall be plenty of leftover.
Our bodies, the Temple of God, shall be fed and taken care of by God. Therefore, He would not allow, His dwelling place to have any idols or unholy people, who comes into His 'House' to taint and dishonor, Him and the Temple.
As Jesus chased away the merchants and money changers, He too would chase away all evils, idols and other attachment from our lives. Jesus said, 'Destroy the Temple and in three days, I will build it up again'. The Jewish people brought about the death of Jesus Christ, the Anointed 'Lamb of God'. Yet in three days, Jesus shall restore and build back His Temple. After three days in the grave, Jesus roused again, and restored His own Body. This Temple shall never be destroyed again. The Glorified Body of Christ or the restored Temple of God shall not be a mere physical building but a spiritual one. When Jesus told the Samaritan woman, that in time to come, neither shall the people worship in Jerusalem or the Mountain, for the Temple of God shall be in the hearts of God's people.
If God wanted to make our tainted, sinful bodies, made of the soil of the earth into a beautiful Temple of His, indeed we are considered really blessed.
We are unworthy, yet out of His mercy, love, compassion and generosity, He awards even unworthy body or 'house' into the status of His Holy Temple.
In the Old Testament era, the Holy Temple of Jerusalem, was a magnificent landmark. It had high architecture value and the wealth of the Jewish people was being poured in, to construct this splendid building. The Holy of holiest was to be entered only once a year by an anointed High Priest.
The Jewish people had to consecrate themselves, by strictly observing Sabbath laws, before they were allowed to worship in the Temple. Yet when Jesus enter, He was furious by the business going on outside the Temple. Jesus demanded that the whole of His Temple, be it the inner or outer court, to be free of other business, beside solely for worshipping God. This scenario happened shortly before His Passion and Death. It was a symbol of preparation of the People of God, for the coming of the Kingdom of God on earth. For God to dwell in our hearts, there must not be other businesses going on, accept that concern worshipping of God.
We then must have the correct disposition of heart, concerning worshipping God. What is the meaning of, 'there shall be no other business, accept that concern worshipping of God'? How can this be applied to our lives, so that God's Kingdom can come to us individually and as a community. When we welcome the 'Agong' or king into our house, what should the scenario be? Even in a family, all activities of the children, had to pass through the 'eyes' of their parents. Parents want to know as much as possible concerning, their education, activities in school, interaction among friends, superiors, etc. In the family, the parents want to bless their children. Guide and nurture them. Giving them moral, emotional or mental support and encouragement.
How can this be applied to our lives, when Jesus is King and Master of our lives?
Jesus gives priority to spiritual growth, concerning our souls and spirits. Jesus comes to us, through the Holy Spirit, bringing with Him the Spirit of the Father, too.
Therefore, where we put or allow Jesus to penetrate, that would be the area, He would transform. Spiritually wise people would try to open up all areas, for Him to enter. When He enters, He enlightens that area of which, we may be in bondage and slavery of sin, but Jesus set us free, by His entry.
Without Jesus, our lives are darkness, sin and hopelessness. What is the meaning of bondage and slavery of sin and the Devil? A person in this position and situation, may know, as his conscience prick him, to do good, yet he can't take up the courage to satisfy his informed conscience. Instead, he does the opposite.
Sins of idolatry, do not merely mean, worshipping of idols or objects, but its application is vast. It is taking other things, relationship, wealth and any creation of God, including other spirits, angels, in replacement or supplement, temporary or permanent as god and worship. Worship also applies to vast areas. It may involve merely our desire of the heart, or mind and thought. Slowly leading to actions.
Superstition is a form of evil worshipping. People in this state and being, seemed to fear, uncertainty, that there is a supernatural power that could disrupt their lives. They would be deceived into believing that God could not set them free or rescued them. Blindly, being ignorant of God as a Divine Providence and God of all creation of the seen and unseen power, who had power and authority over all that He created, by His own 'Hands', caused fear and hopelessness in the minds and hearts of the people. Most people had refused to turn to God, but rather abide, in obedience to the rites and rituals, that would neutralized the bad omen, curse, charm, witchcraft, etc.
Sins of idolatry, can be in the form of worshipping money and its power. It can also be having too high a regard concerning what the world considered as blessed and condemning what God considered as blessed. One of the examples is, people who possessed the above average worldly wisdom and intellects are upheld by society as models for others. Whereas those whom the world considered as foolish, weak and helpless are condemned and categorized as outcast and a curse to their family, yet to God these may be situation, moment and opportunity of grace and blessing.
God wanted to transform our collapsing house into a Temple of His, whereby He is truly worshipped. To the extent of having all the cells of our bodies, together with all its systems, to solely depend on God to function accordingly, and as a whole the body, to bow down before God and worship Him only.
Spiritually, we needed to surrender our freewill back to God, let Him manage, with full knowledge, out of true humility, before God, that we are incapable of handling the 'diamond' or 'treasure' that are hidden in the depth of our hearts.
With this trust, God rewarded us with faith. God made us to seek Him, in all conditions and situation in our lives. When we have found Him, we are to love Him with all our hearts, souls and our minds.
This would come to the core, of our very existence. For we are meant for God. To love Him with all our hearts, souls and our minds. Complete submission and worship, in our body, soul and spirit. For we come from God, live for God in this world, then we shall return to Him. He is the source of our lives and love. He is the only True Shepherd, who would even die, in order to save His sheep and lamb. Others would have run away, living the sheep to the attacks of the wolves and wild animals.
Praise the Lord. Amen.
