THE TRANSFIGURATION (MATT 17:1-13)
Peter, James and John were the main witnesses of Christ after Jesus left them. Jesus wanted to prepare them fully, one of the highlights was through the transfiguration, but it was only after Pentecost Sunday that they were on the path to full enlightenment, by the presence of the Holy Spirit, in their lives.
Even the transfiguration or whatever miracles that Jesus had performed, could never reveal the reality and mystery of God, in their lives and ours too. True happiness, joy, peace and charity, could never find a home in our lives, not unless we welcome and let God's Spirit take control. The Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles, after Jesus ascension, was the Spirit of the Father and of the Son, but it is uniquely the Spirit, that had empowered Christ to fulfill His mission of salvation and redemption on earth. With the presence of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, who had proven His great love and perfect obedience to God, dwelling and actively working in us, we could be like Christ, thus God shall call us His beloved sons and daughters.
During transfiguration, Jesus' Human Nature gave way to Divine Nature, by the mystery and power of God. His flesh was camouflaged revealing the Divine Nature of His Soul and Spirit, embodied in a human figure.
When Moses and Elijah died, they were detached from their physical earthly body, to be decomposed. What was immortal, thus eternal, was their souls and spirits. Prophet Elijah disappeared, but through the mystery of God, he was taken back to heaven.
Even though their human bodies had gave way to nature's decomposition, yet there was another body, but not to its perfection, like that of glorified human Jesus' body, but still they had a figure and appearance that are spiritually concrete and real.
Jesus' glorified human body, had physical flesh, blood and all human systems, whereas others, except Blessed Virgin Mary, would still have to wait for Jesus' Second Coming to gain our unmerited rewards.
The eyes of the disciples were mysteriously opened by God's grace to see the Divine Nature of Christ. If God had not given them grace, their eyes would be completely blind after seeing the extremely bright light.
We too shall fall short the glory of God. God never hides Himself away from our sight, but we could never be worthy to look at God, face to face, what more eyes to eyes. Yet in heaven we would be able to look at God this way, without fear or shame, like Christ, who now reign with God, as His right-hand person.
No matter how we wanted to cling to the false value of this world, which is useless in the Kingdom of God, we had to let go of everything we had struggle so hard to develop. We therefore needed to be molded by the Holy Spirit, so that our values would be eternal. What is the use, if we struggle to get the highest academic qualification, with full knowledge that this cannot be applied in life later on?
Therefore we need to let God's value, form through the Holy Spirit, to overpower all human acquired value, or worldly value, which to God is foolishness, unless that values come from God's Nature forming in mankind.
The mystery of God, is so vast, no human mind could ever explain. The transfiguration to the closest Disciples of Jesus was even misinterpreted, when they invited the two holy Prophets, including Jesus to stay on, by saying, 'If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.'
The Disciples were shocked and overwhelmed, by so great a blessing, that in fact they were speaking without knowledge of what they meant. They did not know that was the moment, when the Kingdom of God was opened for them to see before hand. The great land, which was so much richer and amazing then what they had on earth. That they would all inherit, as the reward of true discipleship.
Moses was the steward of the Ten Commandments and Elijah, was the prophet prophesied to come before Christ. These two to-be saints came and approved of Christ. If the disciples knew they were working in co-ordination and hand in hand and did not contradict each other's mission, they would not be confused. God revealed to them that the Prophets of the Old Testaments and Jesus were in fact working to fulfill One Single Mission, that is the Salvation of Man.
Jesus told the three disciples not to tell anyone, what they had witnessed, seen and heard, until the mission of Jesus was fulfilled. The disciples had been very faithful and trustworthy.
John the Baptist was indeed Elijah in the spirit. Elijah's purpose was to prepare the way for the Messiah. The one who personally came to do that was John the Baptist, who was given the spirit of Elijah. God gave John the Baptist the mission that was specially reserved for Prophet Elijah. He came but not many people realized it.
Moses, the steward of the Ten Commandments, by his appearance had the pleasure to anoint Jesus, to bring these Commandments to fulfillment. He passed over his duties to complete what God had started in him, to Jesus Christ.
As they were talking, a shining cloud came over them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my own dear Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!" The shinning cloud represented the Holy Spirit and it overpowered them so that they could hear the voice of God. Without the Holy Spirit's empowerment, we are deaf to the voice of God. God the Father spoke, channeling His voice through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit transmit the voice of the Father, " This is my own dear Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!" This was the presence of the Trinity God, three persons in One Divine Nature working in co-ordination, love and peace.
My own ) words of God to
Dear Son ) His beloved
Well pleased ) Son Jesus Christ
'My own' is enough to please any person if God was to address it to him. To add 'Dear Son', God the Father holds Him very close to His heart for Christ Jesus had fulfilled the will of God with so much love and this pleased the Father. He untiringly did God's work on earth, fulfilling His will with great love and hope. Mankind could have worked or slaved for the world and it's cares but Christ slaved Himself to the will and love of His Father.
As Disciples of Christ and having His Spirit we must slave for the work of God, to fulfill His will for each one of us with great love. How can we do this? If, we are not priests, religious or the Church's workers, how are we to fulfill God's will on earth? All of us are to fulfill the will, God had entrusted to us. In fact it was God, loving and at service of one another, through another human beings or instruments. It is wonderful to be consecrated by God, to fulfill His mission on earth. The truth is no one is exempted from Christ's work of evangelization and salvation of souls.
Jesus gave us the greatest of all the Commandments. The summary and highlight of the Ten Commandments - love God with your whole heart, soul and mind and love others as you love yourselves.
We have to put God's Spirit at work in the grass root level. Everywhere we go whatever we do we have to bring Christ with us to live inside our hearts, souls and mind and allow Him to manifest His Light to others. He Himself does the work through our submission and co-operation of our human body, we are the instruments, consecrated objects and servants of His. This is pleasing to God the Father.
What is different between slave of God and of the world, flesh and Devil?
Here we see God, versus three areas, whereby evil are at work. Firstly the Devil work through the world, by implementing values that contradict God's value. Man seek to be independent from God, yet by this, they had to depend on certain elements, which are their own human wisdom, to get hold of certain worldly wealth, in order to try to applaud the souls and spirits. The souls would be rebellious and anger, by human deceitful actions.
Man may be slave of their own flesh, which would lead them to selfishness and self-centered. They would unknowingly and contend to be blinded in worshipping the flesh and yield to its sinful wills and desires, which were directly the outcome of sins, of our first parents. We approved and embraced their natures, sins and follow their ways and lifestyles.
What about slave of the Devil? The Devil, is not easily seen. He is very selfish indeed, to have used other objects and instruments to hide his ugly face. Many were lost because the Devil had veiled his face. If he had revealed himself, many dared not tread in his territory, what more to obeys his command. He hides himself, like a perfectly wrapped present, delivered to us by Santa Claus, who was his instrument. Man would be overjoyed to have received present from this Santa Claus. If we had not put our full trust in God, we could easily be fooled and accepted those presents, yet many who later opened it, regretted, yet they would not turn to God. Submission to God, is through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, molds us to be perfect saints, even on earth. As long as we yield and trust in God, we must welcome the Holy Spirit, which is allowing God a full hold of our lives. It is useless to be complacent as followers of Jesus, by mere human wisdom. Jesus said, "Foxes have holes and birds had nest, but the Son of Man, had no place to lay His head!"
What did He mean by that? Did He mean a human family and home? Or is there other meaning behind this mysterious Words of Jesus?
Jesus had His human Mother, Mary and His relatives and friends, surely!
Yet He claimed to be homeless, why?
In this world, Jesus had no place to call His home. He was ridiculed, condemned and misunderstood by His own relatives and friends. Still Mary had to continuously ponder on the Mystery of her Son, Jesus Christ, who called God His Father. "I must be in My Father's house, doing His business!', were words of her twelve years old son, Jesus Christ, who spoke us God. We too as followers are called to commitment and discipleship. This is so much deeper, than mere outward signs, but what matters the most is the inside. True Disciples were called to embraced Jesus' Life, suffering, then obtain and receive, our unmerited Gift through His Victory, on the Cross. We cannot possibly follow Him and embraced His values and mysteries, apart from the Holy Spirit in us, as proved by His own personal closest disciples. They could never understand Him. We are far from being as close to Jesus as His twelve Disciples were? How can we ever claim to be able to follow Him? Only after the descend of the Holy Spirit on the Disciples, God officially Anointed them to be Apostles, they were immediately move toward full enlightenment. Many Christians, claimed to be followers of Christ, but yet not able to experience the real presence of Christ. Ask ourselves sincerely; had we allow the Holy Spirit, enough room to expand and grow in our lives? Or had we limit His movement and replace His will and plan with ours? Jesus had no earthly station or home, but He is Spirit. Therefore only through the Holy Spirit, the Kingdom of God is within our reach. Submission is easier said then truly done. It requires us to allow the Spirit of God to form our lives and change our pride and astute values, into Christ's value and wisdom. To allow Him, to move our concentration of energies to fulfill His purpose and will, which might required us to change, and move from our comfortable and familiar environment of home or work. This was what happened to Abraham, when He had to move from His safe home in the territory of Ur, to the Land that God was going to show him. He obeyed without hesitation and God blessed him abundantly.
All followers and true Disciples of Christ like John the Baptist or even Christ Himself had to suffer persecution by men. We too have to face the same situation, the moment of grace to strengthen our faith and please God. Endure and persevere until we reach the end of life's journey, the rest shall be moments of great joy after sharing the sufferings of Christ in our own ways and later share His joy and the triumph of His resurrection. We too shall be resurrected to share in His glory and splendor.
Evil people, shall rise to condemnation, torment and extreme pain and sufferings for rebelling against God and tormenting God's people on earth. Their destiny is with the devil, who was their master and their dwelling place is eternal separation from God, or hell, with sulfur added to bring the agony to its height.
As instruments and servants of God we shall dwell where our Master dwells, that is heaven.
Therefore let us sell everything we had, and follow Jesus. How?
Shall we give away all our material wealth; spare clothing, pocket money, extra daily food, shelters and follows Jesus?
God wanted all human beings to detach ourselves from indulging in material and worldly comfort as though we are obsessed to them, apart from them, life is valueless.
We cannot make the gifts of God to Man, as though they were god, of which all our hearts, mind and strength were too preoccupied with them.
God is the gift giver and He had plenty to give, as all material was His creation and He gives to whom He pleases. Yet it would be a curse to man, if we had all we need and yet untiringly indulge ourselves on them, especially our greed for money and food.
What was really needed was to fill up our stomach, with basic food, for health and growth reason, rather then to applaud our appetite, with fanciful, unnecessary food.
Whereas money was not for us to selfishly accumulate, neglecting the souls of spiritual riches. Money is for us to be transform into currency in exchange for our basic need.
True disciples of Jesus would not be bother, and doubtful about God's generosity and Providence. They knew that everything is just a prayer away. Even without asking, God naturally would shower those who depended on us, with great blessing, especially spiritual, which is so much precious then material blessing.
Praise the Lord. Amen.
