Frequently Asked Questions by Parents and Teachers What is WEEKdays? WEEKdays stands for Women Encouraging Excellence in Kids. It begain in 1999 as the education budget cuts were hurting kids who were borderline or who needed extra help and couldn't get it. It is propelled by university student volunteers who want to give back to the community a little of what they have received. Everyone is enriched in the process, not only the high school students who are tutored. Where is WEEKdays located? map WEEKdays uses the head office of PEV (Prom-Edu-Val) a charitable foundation located on the first floor at 24 Wellesley St. West. Unit 1A WEEKdays is just a 2 minute walk from the Wellesley Subway station. What are the hours of operation? Students have a weekly appointment on Mondays or Wednesdays with a tutor once a week for anywhere between 60-120 minutes long. depending on their ability ot concentrate. Returning students are accepted automatically and are placed in priority with tutors. New students must fill the criteria for acceptance. Applicants are screened within 48 hours of reception, and normally have their first tutoring session within 1-3 weeks of applying depending on the availability of tutors. The last day students are accepted into the program is February 28th of each year. How can I obtain more brochures or information? A package with brochures, application forms and other information has been delivered to the Guidance Office at your school. Teachers can make all the copies they need of anything in the package. Should you need additional materials, please use the e-mail address on the home page of this site or call the number on the brochure. Where do tutors come from? Most tutors are students from the Unversity of Toronto. They are screened and matched by an experienced teacher with Special Ed. Specialist qualifications. All tutoring is done on site in a small hall under visual supervision. Tutors might call subject teachers for input when parental permission has been granted on the application form. This tutoring opportunity is a stepping stone to the Faculty of Education for one or two tutors each year who require experience with high school level students.. What other staff does WEEKdays have? A Program Manager oversees the entire program and liasons with PEV, the not-for-profit society that provides the tutoring space rent-free. Each day, a regular site coordinator supervises assures the smooth running of daily activities and keeps an attendance record. A qualified teacher acts as an Educational Consultant and runs a small training and mentoring program for the tutors. Many others volunteer on a one-time basis, providing services as needed to make the program successful: recruiting, publicity, office help.... How long has WEEKdays been running? WEEKdays began in September 1999. Since we opened our doors about 500 students and volunteers have participated in the program. I would like to visit. How do I arrange this?
