Weekend
Writers
Guild

Welcome!

This is for individuals who want to express themselves through writing but are afraid to. (There are a lot of us!)

Writing is but part of my day job. (I guess writing is always part of everyone's day job but some of us get paid for what we write!) However on weekends, I meet with and encourage individuals, young and old, mostly from vastly different backgrounds and cultures to become familiar with the English language, by simply writing their everyday experiences. That doesn't make me a writing expert by any stretch of the imagination. But I share a passion for writing with all these folks and I guess what I learned is something worth sharing

There are volumes of web pages out there that will advise you on how to write. They are all worth reading, as they contain nuggets of wisdom based on their training and experience . I will recommend several sites that you may want to check out and learn from, but hear me out this one time.

My approach is simple: I want you to write because there is fun in writing. (Believe it or not, there is also fun in the editing process!) Ever run across those characters on your e-group who keep forwarding jokes and other yucky stuff that is supposed to be funny? While Slate and other online magazines may offer logical explanations for this behavior, the most basic motivation these folks have is they simply want to share what they think is funny!

The other motivation is more sublime: They want to express themselves and in the process, get noticed. In a sense, all of us want the same thing. Unfortunately, a huge majority of us suffer from writer’s phobia. This is nothing but the fear of being rejected, even ridiculed. And it is not just writing. It takes a lot of guts, for example, for someone to join a beauty contest. Or speak in public. Or perform before a live audience.

All these processes are an expression of an inner passion. People join beauty contests to express their perception of God’s handiwork in their being. They speak in public to express their thoughts and intelligence. They perform in theater or dance to express their artistry.

People write to express their hearts and soul.

You wanna write? Take that first step!

But whatever it is, the hardest part is always the first step- the first step on the fashion ramp, the first step on the podium or theater stage. In our case, the hardest part is taking that piece of paper and pencil (or laptop computer for the more affluent among you!) and starting to write. The one advise beauty contestants, public speakers and theatrical performers are given is this: go forward and have fun!

Weekend writers are ordinary individuals with an extraordinary passion. We would like to share our minds and hearts and souls with those who appreciate reading about persons who share their minds and hearts and souls. Is there such an audience? In our experience, there is always an audience for anything. You just have to find them (or is it the other way around, they have to find you?) and make the connection.

Weekend writers struggle to escape from perceived self-limitations of their own capability of expression . Sometimes, they are individuals who struggle to keep up with the norms of writing and are oftentimes, inhibited from creative expression because of this constraint.

Well, if you somehow fit into that mold, you have come to the right place. There is of course one prerequisite for membership. You can join only if you truly, absolutely want to have fun while writing! If you pass this criterion, please click here to continue!
