With the confrence tournaments over and the NCAA tournament bracket coming out tonight, teams are preparing for a run at the Final Four. Who has a serious shot at winning the Big Dance? Probably a team that is in the Top 25 right now. Many teams have good records but aren't true contenders. Who is a real contender and who is just a pretender? One of the biggest teams in all of college basketball is the Duke Blue Devils. This year, Duke has been a mainstay in the Top 10 (as usual) but has a few key losses against some mid-level teams such as Virginia Tech and two against Maryland. Duke has played well but |

could struggle against top teams. Another pretender in the Top 25 is Boston College. Although the fantastic start, the Eagles' play has dwindled lately with the latest loss coming in the second round of the Big East Tournament against the suddenly hot West Virginia Mountaineers. BC could fall as low as a four seed in the NCAA Tournamrnt and it is yet to be seen if the Eagles can succeed against highly ranked teams. The team that upset the Eagles, the West Virginia Mountaineers, will be serious contenders in the NCAA Tournament. WVU is coming off huge Big East Tournament wins over Providence, BC,Villanova and althought they lost in the championship against Syracuse, West Virginia is a very good team, and an extremely competitive force to be reckoned with. A low profile contender in the Top 25 is another team that West Virginia beat, the Villanova Wildcats. Coming off a big win over Pittsburgh in the Big East Tournament, Villanova has a serious shot at going far in the NCAA tourney. With sharpshooters Allan Ray and Randy Foye and big man Curtis Sumpter, Villanova can matchup with anybody. The NCAA Tournmant will be very interesting this year and there is no clear choice to win the championship. Even powerhouse Illinois lost to Ohio State last week. No one is safe this year and surely there will be a lot of upsets this year, even more than usual. -Written by Jesse |
