Wide Open Without Barry
Home
1. Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers acquired J.D. Drew over the winter which will help their lineup and outfield greatly. Losing Shawn Green doesn't help the Dodgers but the addition of Jeff Kent makes this offense great. The question mark for the Dodgers is their starting pitching. Eric Gagne is stellar out of the bullpen but the Dodgers playoff hopes rely on Derek Lowe, Odalis Perez and Jeff Weaver.
2. San Diego Padres
The Padres lost David Wells in the offseason but added Woody Williams which is pretty much a lateral move. They have a great infield led by First Baseman Phil Nevin and Shortstop Khalil Greene. The Padres have a good starting rotation led by defending NL ERA leader Jake Peavy and Woody Williams. The Padres have all the pieces in place for a good year.
                           THE REST
The San Francisco Giants are nothing without Barry Bonds. They have a great starter in Jason Schmidt but lack a number 2 or 3 starter. The Arizona Diamondbacks have improved their batting order greatly with the additions of Shawn Green and Troy Glaus. Their starting rotation is their main problem, the loss of Randy Johnson will hurt greatly. The Colorado Rockies are pathetic. Their Opening Day starter was Joe Kennedy and it doesn't get much better after that. The Rockies are destined for a year in the cellar.
