MENOPAUSE |
For many years women relied on estrogen to help control the hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. Unfortunately the long term use of estrogen was revealed to be detrimental causing a significant increased risk of cancer. Estrogen therapy is no longer a first line treament for the symptoms of menopause. With the above in mind even mainstream medical physicians have begun suggesting natural alternatives. |

SOY ISOFLAVONES and BLACK COHOSH |
Soy is a member of the pea family. Soy isoflavones are similar in chemical structure to estrogens and are referred to as phytoestrogens. Soy is helpful for some women in reducing hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Interestingly, whereas estrogen can cause cancer, many researchers feel that soy is a cancer preventative. |

Black Cohosh is the most popular herbal supplement for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. In a study of 629 menopausal women who used black cohosh for 6 to eight weeks, 80% noticed improvement within 4 weeks. This is faster than even conventional estrogen hormone replacement therapy. Another study contrasted black cohosh against a placebo (sugar pill) and estrogen. The black cohosh group had the best result in relieving menopausal symptoms. |

SIDE EFFECTS Black cohosh has excellent tolerence. A small percentage of users may have gastric upset therefore it should be taken with food. High doses may be associated with headaches and dizziness. Some people may be sensitive to soy and have digestive upset. This is usually preventable if the product is taken with digestive enzymes. Excessive use of raw soybeans is not reccomended. |
