Is a Weimaraner for you? That is a hard question to answer. We thoroughly question prospective puppy buyers to see if a Weimaraner is suitable for them not the other way around. If you don't like having a dog in the house all the time, and only want a guard dog to sit outside and protect the house then a Weimaraner is not for you. A Weimaraner thrives on human contact and needs to bond with it's owners to really bring out their intelligence and loyalty. A Weimaraner requires a reasonable sized yard to run around in, with secure fencing otherwise they are likely to escape and go out exploring the world. They have no road-sense whatsoever, in other words they need total supervision when they go out for a walk. They are very likely to run straight across the road without looking for cars. They require a fair amount of exercise and enjoy going out jogging or running with their owners or simply for a game of ball at the nearby park. They live usually to an old age and Weimaraners of 12-14 years old are not uncommon with some living to 15-16 years of age. They make a great long term family pet to be brought up with young children. Feeding a Weimaraner is an expensive task at times, being a medium-large sized dog they eat in proportion to their size. With an adult male weighing up to 40kg or 90lbs and a female up to 30-32kg or 70lbs this can be expensive. Multiply that by 4 dogs, which we have, and it adds up to a small fortune! Add to this expense the cost of yearly inoculations at the Vet's and the unexpected visits when one of the dogs becomes sick and it becomes even more expensive. There you have it, some basic information on the Weimaraner. We hope this page has helped you decide if want to own the best breed of dog there is.
