The New England Synodical Board has adopted Emmaus Center of Ellsworth, Maine as a special project for 2002. Homelessness continues to be a monumental problem in New England. We hope to especially reach out to women and children.
Sister of Mercy, Lucille MacDonald has been in Maine for twenty-one years. Presently, she oversees three shelters in the Ellsworth area: Emmaus House a twenty-four hour a day shelter for the homeless; Sr. Barbara Hance Transitional Home and the St. Francis Inn.
The Emmaus Center also offers educational opportunities, alcohol or substance abuse treatment, agency and social service referrals, in-house preschool / parental discussion and an in-house Special Children's Friends Playgroup.
In addition to monetary donations, The New England Women of the ELCA seeks donations of items to create in kindness packets for women, youth and children. See the page In Kindness Packets for a list of items and contact information.
