First Mosque in Bahrain (Khamis Mosque)

The twin minarets of the ancient mosque are easily noticed on the right hand side of the road as you drive along Shaikh Salman Highway from Manama towards Isa Town. It is considered to be one of the oldest relics of Islam in the region the most ancient Islamic building in Bahrain since its adherence to Islam.

The establishment of the mosque dates back to the reign of the Caliph Omar bin Abdulaziz (AD 717 – 720). Only the Qibla (Ka’aba direction - Mecca) wall with its prayer niche (Mihrab) remains now. This wall is about one metre deep and situated north of the western minaret. The mosque was expanded several times. The most obvious renovation was carried out in the 10th century.

 This renovation included the cylindrical pillars, the pointed Arabian arches, Kufic inscriptions, and a number of wall niches that decorated the elevations of the prayer room, water well, scholars houses, and transport animal yard were also annexed to the mosque.
