"Stories about Suge's, let's call it convincing, way of business are well known" is what Source magazine wrote in one of their editions, "but almost just as well known is his care for his artists. He buys them houses, cars and helps them with handling their alimony and tax obligations." In the case of Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur, he even gave them their freedom back by bailing them out of jail. Snoop was eventually found not guilty by the court, for the charge of murder. It was said that he had been involved in a shooting to get back at some gang members. Tupac Shakur's contract with Death Row meant that he was bailed out by Suge for over $3 million. Shakur was in jail because he was accused of rape.
Suge Knight wasn't worried about using violence to get what he wanted. As a professional American Football player with The Los Angeles Rams, Suge used every dirty trick in the book to win games. After his short athletic career, Suge worked as a bodyguard and extortionist for drug dealers. People that stood in his way often needed serious surgery after he was done with them. Even as the managing director of Death Row Records he still threatened any competition with firepower. He apparently intimidated journalists by hanging their heads over an aquarium full of deadly piranhas so that they did not ask the 'wrong' questions, and wasn't even scared of handling his own artists violently.
The well known black advocate of civilian rights, Jesse Jackson, arrived for a meeting with Suge in his office while a cleaning lady was still sweeping blood of the floor. "A Difference of opinion" was what he called it. Two talented new twin rappers, called George and Stanley Lynwood once made the mistake of using the telephone in Suge's office without asking first. Knight himself beat them up, forced them to take off their clothes and robbed the twins of their money and jewellery.
Suge was able to climb to the top of the ladder of West Coast rap, because the music had developed into a mirror of the violent lives of juveniles in the ghettos. Real gangstas challenged the rappers to act as violent as they appeared to be in their lyrics. This was why more and more rappers were involved in Gangs like the "Bloods" and the "Crips". With the financial suport of drug dealers Death Row records pushed themselves to the top, fearing nothing on the way.
Suge had connections with the Bloods, and he didn't make a secret out of it. Red was his favourite colour. After the Mike Tyson fight in Las Vegas, he started an attack on some Crips, together with Tupac Shakur and several other friends. Shortly after that, Suge's car was shot at 14 times, perhaps as a payback for the incident earier. Tupac Shakur was hit several times, and died after seven days in a hospital. Knight had to explain his behaviour last year in the Los Angeles court building. For violating his probation time, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison. He is not allowed to have any contact with Death Row anymore. And although the Record company still exists, it is just a matter of time until Suge's violent behaviour will cost him his Record Label as well. Now released from prison in the summer of 2001 suge renamed his company to 'Tha Row' has signed some new artists and resigned kurupt hes on his way back.
