Benjamin Sutton's name lives on in Leicester in what has become known as the Sutton Charity. When he died in 1858 he left almost £30,000, which was put in trust and used to help poor people who had spent time in hospital "so that the poor man or woman restored to health by the blessing of God may be able to start afresh in the world and may not have to encounter poverty at a time when he or she is least fitted to bear it".
