Subject: Alfred Serpell

You say that Alfred arrived in Australia on board the Lincolnshire in 1863 with his parents and siblings. I too have a record of Alfred arriving on this date but his parents arrived somewhat earlier in 1851 on board the Aaronache, from Plymouth. His father Richard had taken land at Templestowe by 1856. It is possible Alfred came later than the rest of the family or perhaps came to Australia, went home and then came back. His father, Richard returned to Cornwall in 1859 and, in fact, died there in 1863. Possibly Alfred went back with him although I have no evidence. I do have a transcript of the diary of Alfred’s brother Thomas which gives a lot of detail about the family’s life in the UK and the constant moving around connected with Richard’s job as a coastguard officer.

I can confirm that Richard and his family arrived on the Aaromanche as I said in my last e mail. I think that was research I have done after 2002. Since then I managed to get the copy of Alfred's brother Thomas' diary. As for the origins of the Serpell family I may have hit the wrong key. It should have said I have documentary evidence of the family to 1575 rather than 1545. Apologies for the original error.

Alfred arrived in Australia aged 26 in February 1863 on board the Lincolnshire. He arrived with his parents, 3 brothers and a sister from Cornwall where they have traced the family back to 1575 in Cornwall.
