Subject : James Suddy Taylor

Just out of idle curiousity do you happen to have any idea as to where James might have been born. The name Suddy as a given name is rather rare. It is found in the Mumford families near Saffron Walden in Essex but has also been noted among the Mackenzie's of the Black Isle in Scotland. The name is presumed to be of Norman origin and appeared in the British Isles as the surname de Sudy in Scotland. There is a Suddie cemetery at the former site of Suddie Easter on the Black Isle. (Sorry, no Suddie's buried there ). It has since been corrupted to Suttie and Sydie. The Anglicized version of the name appeared in Cambridgeshire in the late 1600's with a James Suddie of Babraham. His eldest daughter is one of my multi g great grandmothers. She passed her surname down to her children as a given name. In the process it was corrupted to Suddy but reverted to the original Suddie in 1859.
Suddie Mumford

There could well be a London connection. The brothers of Suddy Mumford III, Samuel and Peter moved to London circa 1850 and started a business as grain merchants. They both became very wealthy. I have seen a few records that indicate they might have hired a couple of their cousins from the Ickleton/ Littlebury area. One drowned off Calcutta and Peter Mumford was known to have interests in India. Another appears in the London Directories as an employee of Samuel. Samuel had two sons but Peter had two daughters, Mary and Maria. I know who Mary married but have no record for Maria. At any rate they were born circa 1840 and were younger than your Taylor. Checking my databases I can find only one unaccounted for female Mumford that could fit and that is a Maria Mumford, born in Littlebury in 1800. I have no record of a Mumford Taylor marriage however anywhere. Maria is also a cousin of Samuel and Peter and her brother is also named Suddy. It strikes me as too much of a coincidence that a man would have the given name of Suddy, which is a local corruption of Suddie, and not be related in some way to either the Mumfords of Littlebury or the Suddie family of Babraham. My 2g grandmother, Ann Moore born 1802 in Littlebury, also had a brother Suddy, born 1800. Their mother was Elizabeth Suddie who married Richard Moore circa 1761. I don't have any Suddie females that could qualify as Taylor's mother.

Overall, rather interesting. - BTW, to see my family try www.mumford.ca Haven't looked at it for some time. Hope it's still there.

From http://www.gencircles.com - James Suddy Taylor born 17 Apr 1813 in London/England Death: 21 Jul 1862 in Maryborough/VIC
James Suddy Taylor aged 27, Free - Bricklayer, married at St John's Launceston on 27 April, 1840 to Eliza Kerrison aged 15, Free, daughter of Stephen Kerrison and Mary Long.

Family historians have not identified James's life before the date of his marriage.
The Marriage Certificate makes it obvious that James was not known to be a Convict - in a society that was very particular about such details.
James and Eliza Taylor had 10 (possibly 12) children born in three different states.
James Taylor died 21 July 1862 in the Maryborough Hospital, Victoria, of "congestion of the brain", and his Death Certificate was filled out without reference to his family. Two men called James Taylor died in the same week, and the other man's death was mentioned in the local paper, 'The Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser' for Friday 1 August 1862.
James is buried in the Maryborough Cemetery.
Eliza Taylor born 7 Sep 1824 died on 26 July 1905 at St Arnaud, Victoria, aged 80, of 'Carcinoma of the Stomach and Liver'. She was buried in the Dunolly Cemetery on 27 July 1905.
