Chu Yan's Christian name, Athena (a Greek Goddess's name), was chosen for her by her father. Having studied at the Hongkong academy of Performing arts, she received The Artiste Alumni Association scholarship in 1990 and 1991. In 1991, she was talent-spotted by broadcasting company TVB and was a children's programme's host. When she graduated in 1992, she was awarded the best actress of her year for her performance in 'Barefoot in the Park'. After that, she signed a contract with TVB and officially stepped into the entertainment ring.
Her achievements include two awards: 'Ten most popular TV station artistes' and 'Most kissable Female star' in 1993 and 1996 respectively. She has also released her debut Mandarin album, 'Earthquake' in 1996, and a Cantonese one, 'Glass' early this year.
Loving acting since Secondary school, Athena has since understood the meaning of life being like a play, and that we are just mere actors. Not long after her stepping into the entertainment ring, Chu Yan was called upon to act opposite Stephen Chow in the movie 'Fight Back to School II'. This led to her being extremely famous and anchored her position in the movie industry.
Athena's interests are very wide. To quote her, 'My interests are like water colours, widespread and exciting. I like to paint with different colours, adding many different styles and patterns on the canvas.' If not an actress, Athena would like to be an artist, designer etc. She believes that art and culture are never dying.
