Change in Gender Roles: Movie ReviewFirst Wives Club |
" In this film, the three women, Brenda (Bette Midler), Annie (Diane Keaton), and Elise (Goldie Hawn) are former college buddies. Brenda is good at accounting; Annie is talented in advertising industry, and Elise is a movie star. They were supposed to have bright future until they got married. Many years later, they reunited at the funeral of a dear friend who committed a suicide because of her husband and discovered that they share the same unhappy history of husbands who dumped them for young chicks or let・s say :trophy wives;. They felt lonely and helpless after helping their husbands build up hugely successful businesses but being dumped in the end. They thought it is time for women to stand up for their rights; they are not going to sit still and do nothing. Finally, they decided to take actions."
Tom: "We believe that this film can give much strength to many women who face the same difficulty in their marriage as the three first wives do. Beyond all doubt, women nowadays are well educated and understand the importance of gender equality very well. So when they face such marital problems or sexual discrimination, they will no longer swallow the insult as they did before. Instead, they will stand up for gender equality and even fight for the justice they deserve. Some male classmates here may think that this movie is to defend women・s rights or even to teach women how to fight against their husbands. However, in our point of view, this movie tends to stress upon the great importance of gender equality. Men are equal to women and women are equal to men.
Gentlemen, if you want to be a real gentleman, make sure that you bear this in mind and make sure that you do give respect to your female friends and classmates. Ladies, when you get respect from your male friends, don・t think it as a matter of course. If you break our heart, we will also stand up and form a :First Husbands Club.;"
