Change in Gender Roles: Movie Review

Joy Luck Club

Synopsis:

" Traditional Chinese women were not being treated with respect; they were often restrained with strict and sometimes non-humane rules from the society. Those with independent minds and spirits were valued even less than the obedient ones. Chinese women's whole lives were devoted to obeying and complying men. In early China, women had to be subordinate to their fathers before they get married; after marriage, they had to be subordinate to their husbands; when their husbands died, they had to be subordinate to their sons. What comes to your mind when you think of the female in traditional Chinese society? Obey, endure, or give birth? "
