The

Most Important Book

for

SDA's to read

(except the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy,

of course!)

"The Sanctuary" by O. R. L. Crozier

What this book is about.

A very brief resumé

O.R.L. Crozier was one of the first Seventh-day Adventists to recognise that there was a sanctuary in heaven and that Jesus had moved into the second apartment of it on 22 Oct 1844.

His book was endorsed by EGW as recommended by God for every Seventh-day Adventist to read.

In the book he lays out three major truths.

The first section of the book explains that the "law of Moses", the ceremonies of the Old Testament were in fact, acted-out prophecies of the work of Jesus on earth and in heaven.

He divides the sanctuary service into TWO major portions.

The first, occupied the early part of the year and is called the spring or "vernal" types. They began in the early part of the gospel "dispensation" and have been operating in the 1,844 years since Calvary. BUT THEY ARE ALSO TO CONTINUE ON INTO THE LATTER YEARS until the close of probation for the world just before the second coming.

The second portion of the ceremonies are called autumn types, and they did not commence until 1844, but they will continue on until AFTER the second coming and right up to the earth made new after the lake of fire. This view harmonises well with the understanding that there are two rooms in the heavenly sanctuary which have two different functions.

Crozier then allocates quite a few pages to proving that the "sanctuary" is not the earth as was commonly believed in his day, but is an actual building in heaven in which Jesus operates as a high priest. He made the point that the Day of Atonement ceremony pointed forward to a heavenly event which will CONTINUE INTO THE THOUSAND YEARS OF REVELATION 20.

The second major truth he presents is that the various dispensations into which the history of the Bible is divided OVERLAP EACH OTHER. There is no abrupt movement from one to another, and in the case of the end of the Jewish dispensation and the beginning of the Christian, there was an overlap period of seven years. This was the last period of Daniel 9:27.

Likewise, in the changeover from "the gospel dispensation" at the close of probation for the world, and the beginning of "the dispensation of the fullness of times", (which began in 1844), there is/was a similar period but not necessarily the same length.

THAT PERIOD HAS NOW LASTED 156 YEARS.

This overlap explains why Jesus on earth sometimes held rigidly to the old ways and at other times moved in union with the Christian era. He knew that He was operating in both dispensations. This is highlighted by such actions as sending lepers to be examined by the priests and to make suitable offerings in the temple. At the same time, He ordained twelve men as leaders in the new branch of His church and taught them to move on from the Old Testament rituals.

Crozier sees the 1,000 years as a time of cleansing (learning?) AFTER THE PEOPLE OF GOD ARE SINLESS AND RESURRECTED.

He spends some time proving that the scapegoat could not be Jesus but is actually a type of Satan, and clearly shows that he is not destroyed at the second coming but left to wander the wilderness earth during the 1,000 years.

The third point he makes is that the "host" (God’s people) are still to suffer persecution in "the last end of the indignation" AFTER the sanctuary is cleansed. This includes the period of the seven last plagues.

It is important to realise that this was the first in-depth understanding of the heavenly sanctuary and its prophecies that God had ever been able to give to His people since the time of Calvary.

The word "dispensation" as used in this book indicates a period of time or the granting of a special attribute of God. For instance, there are:-

Dispensations overlap by various time-periods
