The WEVFD was established in 1972 after several years of hard work by the founding fathers of the Fire Service. Prior to the WEVFD being established, the residents of the Town of Elmira, District #1, relied on the City of Elmira for Fire Protection. As the structure fire first had to be confirmed prior to the City Fire response, valuable time and property were lost, thus the WEVFD opened in the spring of 1972.
