OTTERBEIN CEMETERY

175 South Knox Street
Westerville, Ohio

In 1856, feeling the local cemeteries did not provide sufficient grounds for the needs of this rapidly growing city, the Otterbein Cemetery Association was formed, with the purpose of securing additional lands for burials. In November of 1856, the Association purchsed land from Abraham Winters, located on the south-west corner of Knox and Walnut Streets. The original purchase, now known as the "Old" section, was laid out to contain 553 lots, spanning 4 acres. As the needs of Westerville's citizens grew, it was necessary to expand the cemetery to accommodate the demand.
The first such expansion, was to erect a mausoleum, which was dedicated on November 30, 1924. Feeling there was still inadequate space, the land to the east of the cemetery was purchased, forming the Knox section of Otterbein Cemetery.

In 1952, the Otterbein Cemetery Association proposed the cemetery be turned over to the City of Westerville. With the passing of Ord. #936, on June 17, 1952, the City became the official owners. The Otterbein Cemetery Association was subsequently dissolved.
