In 1856, feeling the local cemeteries did not provide sufficient grounds for the needs of this rapidly growing city, the Otterbein Cemetery Association was formed, with the purpose of securing additional lands for burials. In November of 1856, the Association purchsed land from Abraham Winters, located on the south-west corner of Knox and Walnut Streets. The original purchase, now known as the "Old" section, was laid out to contain 553 lots, spanning 4 acres. As the needs of Westerville's citizens grew, it was necessary to expand the cemetery to accommodate the demand. |
