WESTCOAST KENNELS MINITURE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS |
MINIATURE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD BREED INFORMATION: The Miniature Australian Shepherd was created from the Australian Shepherd by people wanting a smaller, calmer version of the popular herding breed. Responsible breeders chose smaller Aussies, keeping in mind the original Aussie's structure and conformation. The Miniature Aussie still had to be a working dog as well as a companion, so "dwarfed" Aussies(short legs, domed heads, buggy eyes) were undesirable. Miniature Aussies are intelligent, active dogs which need more exercise than the typical toy or lap dog. Minis excel in dog sports like flyball, agility and competitive obedience as well as competing in herding trials and being working ranch dogs. While generally sensibly suspicious of strangers, many are gentle and friendly and make excellent therapy dogs, a visiting hospitals and seniors residences. A good breeder will be able to tell you if a puppy in her litter is right for your lifestyle as each litter usually has both more outgoiong and more laid back pups. Be sure to tell your breeder what you want to do with your Mini, but keep an open mind as your versatile new dog may just get you "hooked" on a new dog sport! |
