Santo Stefano of Sessanio

Travel to the mountains and sea of the Abruzzo region of Italy. This region, sure to be the next Tuscany of Italy, is an area of strong contrasts. We will retreat to our studio in the medieval hill town of Santo Stefano of Sessanio, just an hour and a half from Rome. There we will work next to traditional artisans, including weavers using medieval looms. Learn Shibori Dyeing and hearty Abruzzi cooking. We will be close to the three spectacular national parks of Italy. Enjoy side trips to L'Aquila, the regional capital, for art museums, food, and regional wine. Hike the mountains and visit Rocca Calascio. Then travel to Vasto, an ancient Roman municipality on the Adriatic Coast. Vasto is the home of the Vasto Artist and Writer's Retreat. Explore the wonders of the coast, including the beach and the gorgeous Tremiti Isles.

  Fabric Dyeing Workshop

This workshop is for people who want to make fantastic one-of-a-kind fabrics for wearable art, quilts, or other fiber projects and work in an adventurous Italian setting. Explore several traditional Japanese resist dying techniques including: itajime (clamp resist), arashi (pole wrapping), and bound resist shibori methods. Adapt techniques to contemporary tools. Learn the ins and outs of vat dyeing with fiber reactive dyes on cellulose fibers. Make delicate pastels, vibrant colors, or rich earth tones from a few basic colors of dyes. Produce glowing hues by layering with color.
