Jorge was born in Baltimore, MD. but he spent the 4 first years of his life living in Puerto Vallarta,Mexico. There he discovered the sea, and had his first encounter with school. At age 3 he went to a kindergarten from 9am to 12pm. The picture above, was taken the first day of classes.
In 1993 we came back to live in Baltimore, my husband was invited to join the faculty at Johns Hopkins Hospital , where he previously trained. By that time, Jorge began his long love affair with books. We spent a lot of weekend's afternoons in Borders(at Baltimore) and Barnes & Noble (at Rochester) reading, drinking hot chocolate and eating pastries, while the snow was falling outside the bookstore's windows. It was beautiful! We lived in Baltimore for 3 years. Next, we moved to Rochester MN because my husband was hired by Mayo Clinic. There, we bought our first house & dog "Cinnamon", a female Cocker Spaniel. Before her, we had only cats and hamsters. In the year 2000 we moved again, this time to Jacksonville Florida (my husband asked to be re-located to work at Mayo Jacksonville) There, Jorge started playing guitar and became interested in track, crew and cross country.
Jorge is an only child, but during his first four years of life in Mexico, he was inseparable from his first cousins and next door neighbors: Jasmine and Bianca. They now are 18 & 17 years old and live in La Jolla, CA. In the above photo the 3 of them are celebrating Jorge's 4th Birthday, shortly after that snapshot was taken, we came to the USA. Jorge has been the greatest gift any parent could ever wish; he is very responsible, hard driven and caring.
Crew and XCountry have taught him endurance and discipline far beyond I could ever have done myself. We admire his relentless stamina. He made the varsity team at crew in only 1 semester and the effort of the whole team, resulted in the various medals they obtained in the city and state championships.
Crew and XCountry also helped him in other areas of his development. They showed him that hard work and an open attitude will render bountiful results. With that attitude in mind he engaged the ultimate challenge... to run for Senior Class President. Jorge loves his school and is grateful for all the memories: the fun ones and the challenging ones he had experienced during his time at EHS. This was felt in the speech he wrote for the debate.I think his classmates connected and shared Jorge's message because they too feel that love for this school. So at the end of his Junior year, his classmates elected him "Senior Class President of the 2006 generation of Episcopal High School of Jacksonville". Then at the begining of the Crew Season , during his senior year, Jorge was elected co-captain of the men's EHS crew progam.
Now an era is coming to the end...his time with us is running short. Soon he will be on his way to face the sea of challenges that come to crash against his feet. We will be with him in spirit at each moment, but the time has come for him to find his own way. I choose to end with the quote Jorge picked for his school yearbook memoirs: "...Let's go exploring!" Calvin & Hobbes
