Westfield Horse Riding Ring Renovation |
Update: At the Dec. 05 Park Board meeting, an initial proposed layout of the Riding Ring was shown for public viewing and comment. Suggestions are being incorporated into the layout plans and will be available again for review at the Jan. 19th, 2006 meeting. In 2002 a request for a State Grant was submitted and approved to make safety improvements to the Riding Ring. The main points for which the Grant was approved were to: Move the Ring entrance from the Horse Crossing at Palomino Trail to an area roughly half way between the northern and southern ends. Build a retaining wall along the east side of the ring. Install new drainage pipes to reduce/eliminate standing water in Ring. Add a small secondary ring for lunging, hot walking, waiting, training, ect. Erect a utility building to store barrels and jumps as well as ring maintenance equipment including a tractor. Install a retaining wall at the north end of the ring and increase the Ring area. Re-grade the Ring. Create a larger Family oriented viewing area with multiple benches. The State funds available for this project total approximately $240,000. The funds must be spent in concurrence with the general improvement plan submitted to the State. The Westfield Park Board must pay for improvements from its operating funds then submit bills for reimbursement to the State. If the State finds certain expenses are not in line with the general plan, they have the right to deny reimbursement to the Park Board. Progress to date includes: Re-claiming of encroached land at the North end of the County property. Clearing of brush and trees at the North end of the ring. Detailed Topological survey of the property showing current layout. Concept drawings depicting general layout plan and area utilization. Soils Report and site Grading Plan submitted to County. Next steps: Hire contractor to perform demolition of current fencing, site grading per plan, and installation of specified gravity retaining walls. Hire company to build new ring fencing and install arena footing. Details of which to be addressed at Monthly Board meetings. Solicit community feedback on details of secondary 50-foot round ring.
