Chargers Win 3rd in State
Nov 9, 2002
The Topeka West High Boys Soccer Team beat the Seaman High School Vikings to clinch a third place win in 5A.  This is the highest the Chargers have ever placed.  The Chargers took an early lead with a goal by Brad Erwin and it held through most of the game.  CJ McEwen was fouled in the box in the second half, allowing Grady Woodruff to score the PK.  With only about 2 minutes left in the game, Seaman scored their only goal. There was a stiff wind coming from the south that helped Seaman keep the ball on our end of the field for way too much of the second half.

Final Score
Chargers 2, Vikings 1

Chargers Lose to Goddard
Nov 8, 2002
The Chargers suffered their first defeat by a 5A team this season.  The Goddard Wildcats had talent, speed, and aggression.  They had the Chargers 4-1 at the half. Chargers outscored them in the second half making the final score 5-2 with well earned goals by Hiram Raby and Grady Woodruff. The Wildcats' Shaun Nicklin, who had scored 48 goals so far this season was held to only 2 goals and one of them was a PK.  Unfortunately, he wasn't the only Wildcat that could score. Hays beat Seaman 2-1 in the other semi-final, thus West will play Seaman Saturday in the Consolation game.

Final Score
Chargers 2, Wildcats 5

2002 Quarterfinal Champs
11/06/02
The Chargers won a long, grueling, quadruple overtime and shootout victory over McPherson. It went past two 10 minute overtimes, two 5 minute overtimes and into a shootout before the Chargers won.
But the Bullpups blew it by missing 3 of their shots against Charger goalie John Bostwick, while the Charger missed only one.

It was cold but otherwise good soccer weather. The first goal of the game was by Brad Erwin at only 1:45 into the game.  But the next two goals were by McPherson and gave them the lead for most of the game.
It was one of those games where we dominated most of the second half but just couldn't score. Also, the referee allowed wrestling moves that has become typical behavior of teams that play in the Wichita area. What these teams lack in ball skills, they make up for in body slams. Jim Post, McPherson coach, said after the game "The main thing though, is that we executed the game plan to a T.  We wanted to play physical."
But, then Phil Carr came up with the second goal with only 3 minutes left to force the game into overtime.  Assists were by CJ McEwen and Hiram Raby.

2002 Regional Champs

The Topeka West High Boys continued their winning streak by routing the Bishop Miege team 2-0.
CJ McEwen scored first with a goal at only 2:45 minutes into the game.  Grady Woodruff scored with 24:25 left in the first half.  Both goals were assisted by Brad Erwin.  The rest of the game was hard fought but scoreless.  The boys received the Regional Trophy at the end of the game.
It was cold and the ground was wet from rain earlier in the day.
