As you step out of the canoe and onto the dock please be very quiet and look to your right. There you will see the Magical Loon!.
(Geez..just like On Golden Pond). These are wonderful birds to watch and hautingly beautiful to listen to their four calls, the Tremelo, Hoot, Wail and Yodel. These birds that have been around for about 20 million years must live most of their lives in water, since they have poor mobility on land. Nesting sites of loons should be avoided by humans, even when you are in a canoe. The incubating parent will leave the nest to defend their eggs, and while they are away from the nest, land predators may steal the eggs. Loons may live more than 20 years and are known to remain submerged for several minutes while pursuing prey. Loons are more common in the Upper Great Lakes of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, but can be found on more unpopulated ponds and lakes here in New England.
Please step inside the weather observatory hut we have built. First, would you like to see the local RADAR ?
The current local conditions and outlook for The Island of the Mushrooms is right here.
Out here on the Island, we have to be aware at all times of the possibility of a HURRICANE!
You can always find good information about the weather back at home if you are wondering what you are missing by visiting NOAA.
Of course, all of our hotel rooms on our Islands come complete with wireless remote control color televisions, but here on the Island of the Mushrooms we get only two stations PBS and The Weather Channel.
Having fun is an important part all of our Islands. So before you climb back into the canoe to head back to the Main Island, you should make a stop at our BUBBLES workshop here on Mushroom.
